GPL is causing me problems (driving ability, not hardware issues)

by Kai Fulle » Fri, 08 Jun 2001 08:57:16

My PB at the Glen is around 1:11:44 (Ferrari) and a very close 1:11:45
(cooper, with a bobble on the front stretch)

I've been driving GPL for about 6 months. And I was driving the demo off and
on since it was released.

My problem seems to be completely to do with breaking and or decelerating.
(...Before I get too far, I have the original LWFF with a squash ball, and I
right foot break. Using the GPL Foolishness setups for Ferrari, and Ali Hine
Cooper setups....)

(1) Exiting the Speed Trap, and breaking for the Big Bend the car seems to
want to dramatically turn to the right or the left as the strait starts.
Letting off the gas slowly doesn't seem to solve this. The only way I can
make the corner is to lift quickly and break very hard (full lock-up) to
stabilize the car, and then go slowly into the bend.

(2) Breaking for the loop, I can break gently enough to sometimes send the
car turning on it's own into the first part of the corner (a proper
trail-brake) but more often than not I miss time it, either turning into the
right side grass or hitting head long into the hay bails. Less efficient
lock up breaking also gets me though this corner more consistently.

These problems are much less pronounced in the cooper, and will probably
switch to it after my league season completes. However the problems still
remain.

Any thoughts?

Plenty... all of which are moot without seeing you drive (could you possibly
upload a lap somewhere?).

With assists turned off, 1m09's or even quicker should be quite easy using
even an unmodified LWFF and Nunnini's setups for the F1 Ferrari.

Either you're experiencing major hardware / calibration difficulties or your
approach to the track is way off.

You are not alone! I can just scrape under 1:11 at the Glen .

Frustrated ...

Are you keeping well over to the left, as close to the rail as you can
get?

Use GPL Replay Analyzer guys, 1:11 is way off the mark, I think you
are taking a completely wrong line here or something like that..
GPLRA will show you what you are doing wrong..

Take a look at this : http://users.bart.nl/~hansvd/school/

If you download the full .zip file you get some example replays
some of which are of Watkins Glen and they may help you.

Andre or Anyone,
I just started using "GPL Replay Analyzer" {yea I know, what are you
stupid?}
anyway is the way that you can set GPL up to make your practice & races laps
make a replay automatically so you dont have to keep going into replay to
save
it? All hopefully positive replies welcome.. :-) Tia.. Thom_j.

Uh, the question isn't exactly clear to me Thom, but when you exit a
race you can save a replay easily from there (at the top right
window).
Press the 'back to beginning' button, press 'record' press 'go to end'
button, press 'record' again and enter a filename.

Then load the replay into GPLRA, load a replay from Huttu or another
Alien, and you can perfectly compare the driven lines and lots of
other stuff.

You don't even need to do that much Andre....

When you're in the menu looking at your lap times or the race results or
whatever, just click the save button under the video window in the top right
quarter of the screen. The save button looks like a Windows folder, it's
second from the right. Type in a filename and you're done :0)

GPLRA is very funky, I'm a big fan of it. Just discovered today the
"binoculars" button on the toolbar to load up all the laps from a particular
track, much quicker than loading each replay individually as I was doing
before!

Ok Andre thanx!!! I just have a bad habit of hopping from say Mexico
to Rouen to Spa back to Monza without thinking about replays since I
am probably the last person who just found out about GPLRA. I am a
little slow at times Ecccck. Like what a year+? phew...lol

Oh, so you're one of those guys online whose defense against being
passed is the blinding smoke screen into the corners approach, eh?
Very effective, I must admit...  ;-)

Anyway, it sounds like you're straddling the crown on the road as you
brake, which will definitely fling your car to one side or the other.
Try keeping the car fully to one side (the left) when you brake.

If you're struggling with control under braking, don't try to trail
brake yet.  Just get your braking done in a straight line, then turn in.
This technique isn't the fastest, but it's certainly good enough to get
you under 1:11.

1) Make sure you have 36 fps all the time, otherwise braking is very hard in
GPL
2) Use a brake-friendly setup, which usually means an 85/30/6 diff and
fairly stiff suspension
3) Make sure the brake bias is well to the front wheels
4) Try lots of other people's setups to find one to match your driving
better
5) If you've done all that... practice (what else did you expect?)

Good luck,
Leo

Well, apart from pressing F2 whilst practicing, which at least means you
don't have to exit back to the pits, there's no other easy way.  For
races you'll just have to make sure you have a large enough replaymemory
setting so you don't lose too many laps.
