Verdict on F1RS

by MDWS » Sun, 01 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Well I gave in and bought F1RS.  And I am utterly dissappointed.  You said
"Ah, but the Demo is nothing like the game" - WRONG!!  It's just like the
***y game - GAME being the key word.  The menu's are unbelievably slow!!!
The Sound of the cars is appalling.  You'd think that since GP2 was released
in..er....96? - they would have come up with something a bit better in two
years!

The car handling is - ok - still very very slow response but I gather I can
improve that with setups etc.  The game is generally slow as well.  I have a
3D card, 200MMX with 64MB Ram.  It's not the top notch but it's pretty
quick.

GP2 is still way ahead - except in packaging and graphics.  BRING ON GP3!!!!

Matt

p.s. "Nosferatu", could you please refrain from replying to this - all you
seem to do with peoples postings is slag them off.

What 3D card do you have?

Let the guy have his opinion, respect it and let's move on.  Can't be all

If you can, do a full install. Also make sure you use the defaults for
where the program items are placed.

The F1RS engine sound is annoying but seems reasonably representative of
the sounds picked up by in-car microphones. I suspect that they forgot to
simulate the deadening effect of the helmet, balaclava and ear plugs
though ;-)

Should be OK. What 3D card do you have? To improve performance, you may
want to turn off replays (they're not implemented terribly well so no
great loss) and edit two lines in the file f1rs\cpa\dll\snd_cpa.ini -
change

SXD_DIST_SATUR=5
SXD_DIST_FADE=75

to something like

SXD_DIST_SATUR=3
SXD_DIST_FADE=30

The first line reduces the volume of the other cars, the second how far
away you can hear them - reducing the second one has been reported to
greatly help problems with first corner slow downs in particular.
Experiment with the values to achieve something you like.

F1RS isn't GP2. It models some aspects rather differently and you need to
try and unlearn some of the tricks for driving GP2 fast. I still find
that F1RS has the occasional annoying feature but the more I drive it,
the more I like it.

Cheers,
Richard

Hehe...consider yourself lucky. I don't have F1RS or else I probably
would slag you off. I'll leave that up to PapaDoc to do. He is after
all the President of the ***s of The Universe Club. I just happen

Whoops! I just realized you must have a 3dfx or you could not check
out the demo. Sorry you didn't like the game.

Membership to the A.T.U.C. is very straight-forward. Just send rude and
obnoxious posts to ras on a regular basis. President Papadoc has
unfortunately failed to adhere to these terms, therefore ALL membership
applications are to be marked ATTN: President Elect Nosferatu.
