RSC - increasing difficulty?

by Destro » Sat, 07 Dec 2002 13:29:51

When doing a single race in RalliSport Challenge, I easily beat the 3
other AI cars. All I see is Beginner and Normal setting when setting up
a player profile. There isn't any Hard setting?!

Gets real boring waxing the AI all the time. Even if I give them a head
start I end up catching up and easily passing them; they never keep up.

Anyway to make the AI cars more competitive?

I'd play online but I haven't a clue as to where to find other players.
Is there a RSC hangout?

You should get the GTRacing2002 mod for F12002.  It's amazing.

No, but it trades that feature for actually being a good sim... ;-)

I think everyone knows that now. Thanks.
There is still room for other games in this group I hope ;-) I have GT2002 and it's a
masterpiece, but sometimes I enjoy a quick blast on  a game like RSC.

Gee, I like replying to my own posts. Is this game that bad that no one
talks about it? <shrug> I think it's the best racing game in years.

Anyway, FYI, there is a setting higher than Normal. I'm managed to hack
the profile.dat file and get "Ludicrous" difficultly to activate and
work but I can't figure out how to get this harder setting AND all cars
and tracks at the same time.

Hm, I wonder if that can be unlocked in the demo or the xbox version.
I traded my copy of RSC for the PC when I picked up my xbox last week.

Did you beat the game already on normal?  I only finished the first
couple of stages on easy, and it was quite easy, so maybe normal is
too easy.

I don't mind having to earn the cars and tracks.  Part of the reward
is unlocking them.  It's that whole career type thing.

It seems to be a good game, maybe not quite as good as I was hoping
for, but still good.

I haven't played it recently.  It doesn't run so great on my Radeon
9700.  I'm going to wait for ATI to make some better drivers for the
game. Too much stuttering.

It's probably not talked about alot on R.A.S, 'cause most folks here
are a bunch of stuck up blowhards who wouldn't know fun if it bit them
on the butt.

Rally games/sims are fun, 'cause most people who play them don't
nitpick the realism to death and Papyrus has never touched them.  It's
just pure driving without the bull of endlessly tweaking setups or
practice laps.

And rallying is *so* much better than circuit racing in real life, too.

RSC - increasing difficulty?

by ClarkRa.. » Tue, 10 Dec 2002 06:35:22

I have two computers here. One I use for most games and my daily work
(my "normal" PC), and one dedicated for racing games (my "race" PC). I
test most games on my normal PC first, because it has the faster
processor and a GF4. When I tested RSC, my first impression was "cool,
this could be a very nice racing game!". I don't have a steering wheel
on this PC so I test with keyboard only. I drove a few stages with the
keyboard and I thought it was way too easy. I could outrun the other
cars quite easily and finish with a lead of anywhere between 20-60
seconds. But still I thought it was fun.

Then I installed it on the Race PC that has a Force Feedback steering
wheel. Why is it that game developers just can't get it right? Why does
the steering wheel feels completely detached from the car? Why does the
steering wheel feel like it's acting like a gamepad? I've tried
different settings, fiddled with the sensitivity and dead zones, but it
never felt right. And that's why I returned the game.

There are a few racing games that do an excellent job with steering
wheels, but IMO RSC isn't one of them.

RSC - increasing difficulty?

Hmmm.... recent events would prove you wrong, it seems. ;-)

Rally Sport Challenge does not offer a lasting challenge. Unresponsive
controls, laughable force feedback, dodgy physics, erratic AI and mostly
uninspired trackdesign see to that. A missed opportunity and definately not
fun.

Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy these games for what they are, if they're
good. POD was fun, MotorHead was fun, ReVolt was fun, 1nsane was fun, Stunt
GP was fun, Crazy Taxi was fun. Emphasis on "was", though, as in:
uninstalled, sold, outta here. Only sims provide lasting interest for me.

Hehehe... yes, that's part of the problem. RC2000 was a pretty good effort,
though limited by its technology/scope. The original CMR was good for its
day, too. I don't care much for the later incarnations as the emphasis seems
to have shifted towards cool ways to smash up the car rather than attempting
to give the driver any usefull feedback of what is underfoot or improving
the world interaction physics (I want to be able to run a 1/2 inch sapling
down, regardless of what environmentalists say). This can be done without
pushing for total realism (cfr. NFS:PU).

I'm amazed you use the term "pure driving"... nothing in RSC is anything
remotely like driving a rally car. Ok, so neither is simracing physically
remotely like racing a real car, but at least those games trick your brain
into believing it is.

RSC - increasing difficulty?

When I first got the game I started playing through the Career mode on
Normal. I was having a hard time winning anything. I quickly restarted
on Beginner mode and it was easy in the beginning but I'm on like stage
5(?) or so and am having a heck of a time winning again. It seems the
Career mode is much more difficult than Single Race mode hence my want
for more competitive AI cars.

Blech, I care not to earn parts of a product I buy. I feel earned it
already by having to put my $40 on the counter. Backwash of a console
port I suppose.

I agree. Its more on the arcade side than I like but the jaw dropping
gfx and lack of invisible walls 2 feet off the side of the course were
the real selling points for me. The hill climb courses are simply
amazing in this game.

Yup. I tried a 9700 for 4 days and promptly returned it. The frame rate
was indeed much higher and had great picture (AA +Aniso) but there was a
lot of stuttering in many games that I just couldn't get rid of. I
believe it was an incompatibility with my computer components.

Here, here. Its along the lines of Porsche Unleashed only in rally form.

Whoa! I'll stop the train right here. I'll give you props for RSC having
definite certain short comings but course design is not one of them.

The courses in RSC are damn impressive if not remarkable. Change your
'mostly' to 'a few' and I'll agree but most of the tracks in RSC are
simply outstanding.
