Howdy,
I was wondering, do people use modified engines when racing online? In
my last few races the people I went up against seemed to have either
jet, turbo, or supercharged engines in them cause they blew away my
lowly, stock Lotus. Does this mean I need to now go online and
"purchase" a new engine for my Lotus?

The GPVL FL (loosely based on F Libre), series is a league for modified cars
but for the opposite reason. We have tried to equalise the performance of
the cars to get as close a pack as possible. IE Eagle, Lotus and Ferrari are
all equipped with Repco engines whilst the BRM has a Honda On the whole, it
is working pretty well, with close battles throughout the field.

Interesting concept, Mark... would this imply everybody
modifies his or her car and then joins the online race with
that? Too bad GPL has no support for online carsets, and with
the source not being available this is not going to happen
soon, I fear. 8-( If Papy gets closed down once and for all
after the takeover, would someone please post the source zip
somehere? thanks ;->

Might be worth a shot for the Brit League Uwe?

Correct.

We have a defined carset which was derived by fairly extensive testing. I
recomment to all our members that they use a seperate exe file in modified
form for our league races. It's not a perfect solution but on balance it's
pretty good. Some cars have the advantage on some circuits whilst others
seem excel at others. On balance over a whole season, the Repco/Brabham
probably has a slight edge over the other cars but no one Marque has
dominated thus far and even a BRM has a realistic chance of getting podiums.
I shall be demonstrating this later on in our season <G>..

Yeah, real shame. Oh for the days of that GP2 type editor in GPL.

Could you mail me the list of engine/chassis combinations?
Or provide a link?

Thanks. Surely the Repco Brabham is a faster combination than the Maserati
Cooper though?

Yes but the repco having the least hp there was no more that we could do
with the Brabham other than to ban it's use.  When we come to run at the
power circuits like Spa and Monza, we will probably handicap it by
introducing a mandatory stop/go in the pits for it. Interestingly enough, a
Cooper is currently leading our series :-)
