I've used IRC (Undernet) for like 3 years or so, and also ICQ too.
ICQ is excellent for finding people who are online, but it sucks
the big fat one for any kind of multiperson chat. That's where IRC
would rule. I'd frequent a #GPL channel if people started***
out in the channel waiting for others to show up.
But yes, trying to figure out the times where people would actually
be there is a bit of a mission... especially when you live in an
unusual timezone :) (+1200GMT)
