Where to find GPL online races???

by 'John' Joao Sil » Sat, 24 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Alison, John and the rest of the VROC team are doing VROC on their own
time (they have real life day jobs) and for free.

Be glad that they are generous enough to provide this for us free of charge,
and without some alterior motive like Micro$oft's Internet Game Zone had
at the time when it only allowed IE users to connect.

The VROC team is not doing this to try and force *you* to use Netscape, but
because they haven't worked out all the bugs and features in the current
version that works on Netscape, and want to get that done before porting
it to IE and having to fix different bugs on two different platforms at once.
This makes great sense to anyone with experience working on programming
projects for multiple platforms...

If you can't wait in the meantime, instead of posting comments like that,
why not spend the relatively small amount of time to download Netscape and
race on VROC... both VROC and Netscape are free, and Netscape will not
take over your Windows operating system, but live happily along side IE,
you only have to use it for VROC and can uninstall once IE VROC is available.

Otherwise *you* are always welcome to hurry up and come up with own version
of IE compatible VROC for us. Let us know when you finish it. But do it fast..
we want it yesterday...what are you still reading this for... finish it now..
:-) for the humour impaired...

Seeyas on the track.

Amen to that. It's a lousy 10Mb DL. If people have the bandwidth to try
and race online they certainly have enough to get Netscape.

Still, complaining's a lot easier than racing, so I can't say I blame them
for*** onto this paper-thin excuse ;-)

.. actually Andrew I have been racing quite a lot. Just not on VROC.
Unfortunately there isnt any alternative to VROC currently so I am forced to
wait at this point.

Maybe TEN will have a place for us to race in the near future, but until
then I am patiently (did I say patiently?) waiting on VROC.

John,

I am not on some Microsoft bandwagon, nor am I un-appreciative of the
efforts of anyone associated with VROC's development. I guess the real fear
is the installation of Netscape on a new Win98 Web enhanced desktop. I am
not as confident as you that the two will co-exist happily as you state and
that there may be consequences that linger after their removal.

I do not wish to start some childish flame war.. just wanted to express
myself and voice something that others may be feeling as well.  I hope this
isnt taken the wrong way.. I too work for a living and am under deadlines
that must be met... so no explanation is necessary.

Once again my apologies if there are any hard feelings.

Already having problems with the new release of Netscape and Win 98
seems the NEtscape doesnt ever want to completely shutdown when you think
you've exited its still chewing mem up in the background . Ctl+Alt+Del and
close program
box is all that will shut it off completely .

I use IE 4.01 as my main browser. After Vroc, I downloaded Netscape 4.07,
and it has been running fine with my system. It also seems to shut down
completely when I close it, I did ctrl-alt-del, and did not seen anything
running that wasn't before I launched Netscape.

It's not Netscape, it's the VROC java code doing this. I've
already written to Allison about this, and it may be fixed by the
time you read this.

It's done it consistently on my system with Netscape 4.04, 4.05,
4.07, and now with 4.5.

As long as I don't either host a race or join a race from the
VROC pages, Netscape unloads fine. I have Netscape on my system
as a primary browser, but use IE 4 as well, since I need to see
how web pages look under both. They co-exist just fine.

If you're using IE 4 as your primary, you can install and run
Netscape, just make sure the first time you run Netscape to
answer the dialog box about making Netscape your default browser
"No", and check the box telling it not to check again. IE 4 will
work just as it's always worked.

 Hope this helps!

Hmmm...
Seems like some people haven't yet tried VROC... well there's still "the
Grandstand" on my page. It's sitting kind of desolate nowdays since VROC
launched!

Don't forget about it. If you're PLANNING on hosting a race at a certain
time/date, leave a message in the MessageBook with all the details. If
there's nobody in the chat window, either wait around (might be a long wait
these days, as everyone's on VROC), or if you really have to, load up the
VROC page in Explorer and use the CHAT to find out what IP#'s are hosting.

doktorB
Seems "the Grandstand" is going the way of some
of the old GPL tracks!! Say it ain't so!

Where to find GPL online races???

Hi Tom,

Actually I hope you didn't take me too seriously there, it was meant to
be more an informative tongue-and-cheek post than any sort of flame, if it
sounded like that then I apologize, I tried to throw the :-) just to
make sure, but I know how hard it is to convey my smart-ass attitude over
text sometimes :-)

I've had experience myself making freeware utilities available and then
dealing with some very demanding users of these free utilities, who
sometimes demand too much support for some of these free things we develop
on our own time and make available out on the net. Sometimes these
"innocent" impatient comments from some users sound worse than they are meant
and hit the wrong nerve and make it seem that the users out there are
unappreciative. I just didn't want the VROC team to get the idea that we
were anything but very appreciative of all their hard work.

As far as I know you should be able to download the "Navigator" version
of Netscape and install it without it changing any part of your Win98
desktop or environment other than plopping it's Icon on the desktop, with the
only possibility that it may start by default it's AOL-Messaging client
(similar to ICQ) which you can then tell not to show again after the first
time it pops up and it should then never bother you again. I run Windows98
here too although without the Web Desktop feature turned on, and I have
had no problems having Netscape available alongside IE, you can even tell
it to leave IE as the default browser for .html files. At least that is
my experience with Win98/Netscape so far, maybe some others running it with
the Web Desktop active can chime in here and verify.

Again, sorry if it sounded like I was flaming you, I'm just a joking
smart-ass and text gets me in trouble sometimes, I really wanted to let
people know that you don't have to wait for IE VROC to enjoy going wheel
to wheel online.

Hope to seeya on the track soon.

That shows an understanding of the "problem". While this...

...showed someone being impatient when there's working code available for
the sake of a small DL and a little extra HD space. There's no intention
to flame anyone, merely to emphasise that no-one has to wait in the pits
when they can be out on the race track with a lot of other people *today*
:-)

The Grandstand's a useful asset for the online racing community as well,
but VROC seems to be the place to go if you want to see RAS online. Of
course that's probably a good excuse for using the Grandstand or ICQ ;-)
