WC Full-Motion Simulator. Help!

by John Simon » Sat, 19 Aug 1995 04:00:00

This may sound crazy, but I have built a full scale approximation of an
F1 chassis in my garage.  The pedals, steering, and shifer are all
connected through a joystick port.  It has a large video monitor above
the steering wheel, and LARGE speakers which I have connected to a
stereo amplifier.

It is now mounted on a dual-axis roller system, and can freely pitch
and roll to about 30 degrees.

A second PC will be able to dake the input from the game PC via
DE***, and translate the vectors to motor control signals.

Now I am stuck.  I need to find a good (inexpensive) way to make the
darn thing move.  I have considered hydraulics, pneumatics, and
electric, and feel that several starter motors (automotive) may be
suitable for moving the appx 300lb. package.

I have no experience with large scale electrical motor controls.  Any
packaged solution is in the $5,000 range.

Anybody know a good way to make this work?

I do! Come down to earth again and order a $20.000.000 shuttle-simulator from
NASA.It shouldn't be to difficult to adapt it to your personal requirements..
:-)

Just joking, but seriously, I don't think this kind of problem can be solved by
a posting to an auto-simulator-newsgroup, do YOU?
If it works and if it's payable though, let us know!

I have been thinking of doing this for a while.  It's good to hear that
someone actually tried it :)  I don't have any solutions for you, but I
would like to hear what you end up doing.  Could you also provide more
information on how you will convert motion from the game to your platform?
That will be a big obstacle for me as I am not much of a programmer.

Thanks,

Pat Dotson
