That's why I don't want a FF controller. Why make the CPU, which
is already overloaded, spend time jerking you, I mean the controller,
around instead of running the game?

There should be options somewhere to reduce the amount of FF.
That may help!

I have the EA game Nascar Revolution.  It basically insprired me to get a
force feedback wheel.  With it on, my framerate drops to the point where
even on my P3-500, the game is unplayable.  Of course turning it off, it
works fine, but then the wheel is loose and it's a pain anyways.  EA isn't
fixing the game.

I also picked up Star Wars Pod Racer, and with the wheel, the framerate is
unchanged, constantly super fast.  It even responds exceptionally well,
giving slight nudges with the slightest wall taps.  Definately made up for
my bad experience with Nascar Revolution.

I have NFS3 and that works well with the wheel.  Monster Truck Madness 2
runs ok but there is noticeable frame rate drop.  Overall my experience with
the wheel has been mixed, I kinda regret getting it.

My Logitech Wingman Force has never had this problem. I thought MS fixed
that problem in their rev2 FF stick?

I found that the MS FF Joystick causes significant frame rate drop in
NFS4 and SCGT (maybe many other games also).  With FF turned off in
those games, the games run perfect.  With FF turned on, frames go out in
about 5-10 Hz when force
effects are played (e.g. when the car run into a wall).  I run those
games with Celeron 400 and TNT, 640 x 480 x 16, so I don't think
processing power is a problem.

Microsoft support really sucks.  I was led by its web site to go around

Anyway, do anyone have similar experience and most importantly, any
solution ?

Yes, I know what you're talking about. IMHO it isn't much of an issue in
SCGT since the FF is pretty lame anyway, mere centering is enough for me.

But... and this is a bit of a paradox... despite of being an arcade
racer, NFSHS is the one which actually provides road grip feedback,
which, contrary to most FF effects, can be very useful if done right.

So, naturally I was eager to enable FF in NFSHS. All sliders to max.
Similar experience to yours - significant drop in frame rate. Was a bit
angry too. But it was also my experience that even if there hadn't been
the drop in frames, the game would've still become nearly unplayable. And
that was because of all the twistin' and shakin' my wheel was performing
the whole freakin' time. So I turned off the engine vibes. Completely.
Who needs that anyway. I also went as far as disabling the collision
effects. In NFSHS you'll take plenty of punishment for crashing anyway, I
don't need my wheel to hit me to keep that in mind. I was left with road
texture and the more essential road grip. The result? No visible drop in
frame rate, no matter how hard you try to look. And I'm prettyy happy
with the effects. In terms of FF it's definitely no Viper Racing, but
it's loads of fun anyways and that's what counts.

In short:   e x p e r i m e n t .

Them FF settings aren't fer nuthin u know. There is enough arsenal to
overwhelm your tactile sensors and it appears that there is enough to
overwhelm your 'puter too. Tune 'em down a bit and you'll be doing
youself a favor.

I have a MS FF wheel, and have slowdown problems with SCGT.  It works fine
with Viper racing, F1rs etc.
so it appears that EA doesn't do FF very well

Why are you running High Stakes in such a low resolution when you have a
TNT???  I have a lesser Celeron than you and I have found that the game
seems to run faster at 1024x768.  I have noticed that with the TNT lower
screen resolution does not improve framerates.  Benchmarks report better
scores at reducing resolutions but this does not translate into real play.

I have the Force Feedback stick but I don't use it much (takes up a lot of
deskspace).  The Force Feedback info is transmitted as compressed MIDI data.
You'd have to expect a drop of some kind.  I think you'll find that game
that have a low framerate to begin with are going to suffer when you use
force feedback, but games with good framerates will still play well.

I have found the best way to increase the framerate in High Stakes is to
turn special effects off altogether which is enough.  You can also set car
detail to low and possibly set view distance to FAR.  With these changes
you'll only be missing the skidmarks, smoke and so on but you get a good
compromise in framerate.

Games with good framerates before Force Feedback is applied run well once it
is applied.  Games like Need For Speed III : Hot Pursuit won't work as well,

That depends on the wheel. The Thrustmaster FF wheel is a terrible CPU
hog. The MS wheel is better, though still uses more than it should.
Logitech's CPU usage is more reasonable.

Make sure you get the 1.02 patch for Nascar Revolution.  While the game
still generally sucks, it does fix most of the graphics problems.

Does this just happen with certain games, or with the system in general?
Does the test dialog in the control panel react slowly too?  If so, you may
want to check to see that you have the latest drivers for your soundcard, or
whatever you plug your controller into.

I had problems with my Monster Sound when I first got the FF Pro, but since
Diamond released a patch, it works fine.  The symptoms I saw were the system
chugging whenever the joystick was active and the force effects taking a
long time to register.

Good luck.
