Point to point with extremely long courses. The best has to be the original
Need For Speed . Alpine was the best ever.

I could be mistaken, but it seemed to me there was a free download Formula 1
manager at Tucows some time ago...  Might want to take a look for a "racing
manager" or something.

I'm sorry, what is "Tucows"?

Undoubtedly some kind of 100+ vehicle Gran Turismo for the PC sporting a
true physics engine, damage model, and upgrade capability. And I want old
cars. And cars recent but not necessarily performance oriented, like the
ones in my driveway.

The local PD doesn't seem to like it when I attempt to set landspeed records
in my Crown Vic; to have a game simulate the experience would be nearly as
satisfying.

Sounds like the original NFS. In physics and fun, easily the best of the
five.

Well, CART, IRL, WRC, Rally Raid, Karting, Touring Cars, sports/super cars,
pre-war F1, Drag Racing, etc... have not been done to my total personal
satisfaction, so those can be improved upon.

Things that haven't been done yet? -How much time have we got? Formula Ford,
F3, F3000, Rallycross, Hillclimbing, Can-Am, Trans-Am, IMSA, Le Mans,
Historic Touring Car (all era's), 50's F1, early 60's F1, 70's F1, 80's F1,
Ferrari Porsche Challenge, Carrera Panamerica, Targa Florio<sp?>, Mille
Miglia, Enduro, eh...

There is scope for a couple more games yet, I would imagine.<g>

Thanks for the feedback, it's great to read this stuff. To fantasize about
racing sims is like a sim in itself, if you know what I mean :-)

Personally, I've always been fond of arcade type racers, probably for
nostalgic reasons. It would be tough (if not impossible) to capture that
real arcade feeling in a PC game, because people don't live in arcade halls.
Sure, you have MAME (arcade emulator), but you don't have the atmosphere of
a hundred different games, sounds, smells (!), and rattling of coins all
around you.

Cheers,

Ice D

A very large download site.  Think CNet on steroids.

I'd like to see this too.  One thing that really disappointed me about
NASCAR Legends was that although that season was the last one where
they ran at a dirt track, they didn't find a way to put that track in
the game.

Inside the package, there should be little condiment packets with
stuff like "Georgia Clay" and "Carolina Low Country Sand", so that
when you raced at a given track, you could open up the appropriate
packet and eat some of it.  This would give the users a "taste" of
what that era was really like.

You bet yo ass there is :D

I've modelled Thrust SSC and Spirit of America for X-Plane 5.66

They're at www.x-plane.org - and the thrust SSC came with version 5.99

I loved the old CAR-WARS wargame when I was in high school.  There
have been several stabs at this style of game (Interstate 76 was
probably the best) and its about time for someone to make another one
with all the latest bells and whistles.

Oh, and NASCAR Legends 2, circa 1985.

Cool, how do they simulate mud on your visor or the effect on your down
force of that garage door falling off your cars roof?

You could take a spoon full of mud in your mouth, and spit it on your screen
as you drive. As for the roof thing, maybe you could get someone to stand
behind you, and hit you over the head with the spoon a couple of times. It's
cheap, and fun! (you only need a spoon, and some mud)
