IndyCar Racing 2 and frame rates and Win98 Help!!

by Mike Kin » Wed, 26 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I have recently upgraded to WIn98, and the only problem I've had
so far is with ICR2. It seems that whenever the frame rate goes about 60 the
game starts stuttering big time. I have all the graphics options turned on,
but I can't get the frame rate to drop down. When I'm on the starting line
things
are ok, the frame rate is below 60, but once I get out on the track its all
over.
The ICR2 cd says that it is version 1.1 for Win95 and Mac.
I am running a 400mhz with 192megs mem, and 18gig hd. There is about 300 meg
free on
the '98 drive and I am running the DirectX6 core.
This problem does not occur when I don't have the directdraw option check
under advanced
graphics options. It also does not seem to happen unless I am in 640x480.

Does anyone have any ideas, other than dump '98?

Thanks

You can use an ALT+KEY sequence to force the game to stay at 30 fps.
I dont remember the exact key, so take a look at the readme or help
file in the ICR2 directory.   I use ALT-X and ALT-M

Mike, hmmmm, leave the directdraw option off, or go with a higher screen
resolution, maybe?

Paul,
Thanks for the tip, but I didn't find anything in the doc, readme, help
about hot keys for
setting the frame rate. The only thing I found was the framerate limits used
for the automatic graphics details. But this never should come into effect
because I am always running at greater than 30 fps.

If you happen to stumble accross those key strokes could you please let me
know,

Thanks again for your help,
Mike

The settings for the "turbo_mode" (that being over 30-fps) is
*never* a default in the sim...It only occurrs when the keys
ALT+T are used, and are reset the next time you load the sim.

Normal ICR2 (DOS/3D/Win95/Mac) have an internal frame-limiter
of 30-fps.  The 3D version is the only one that can be set to
effectively shut the frame-limiter *off*.

Here's a list of keys...Please note that some may not work in
the release version (these are from the beta):

Alt+F11:    Display / Hide frame rate.

Alt+F12:    Start / Stop frame rate display.

Alt+M:      Three-state toggle for mirror: none, medium detail, high
detail.  Defaults to medium.  AAing takes place in hi-res
mode only.  Switching to none will not erase mirrors -
for clean no-mirror display, exit***pit view and re-
            enter (F10).

Alt+W:      Three-state toggle for weather: hazy day, night, and rain.

Alt+R:      Toggle replay menu display: On-screen replay menu slows
down replays a lot; toggle off to speed replays.  You
must toggle back on later, because all menus will be
            invisible while off.

Alt+K:      Sky optimization toggle: If you don't like the horizon
glitches this causes, toggle off - although frame rate
will noticibly slow.  Actually causes glitches on any
non-textured polygon that spans entire screen horizon-
tally, like when going under some bridges.

Alt+A:      Anti-aliasing toggle.  See notes above.

Alt         Show aa'd edges toggle; AAing must be 'on' to see effect.
+Shift      Displays edges the edge cache thinks are being drawn once
+A          per frame in red, twice in green, and 3+ times in blue.

Alt+T:      Timer toggle: when the timer is 'off', the physics runs
at the frame rate: it will be slower than reality at less
than 30 frames/sec, and faster than reality at greater
than 30 frames/sec.  Advantage of 'off' is when the timer
is on, the frame rate cannot exceed 30 fps.  Defaults to
            'on', i.e., realistic physics.

Print       Dumps a 24-bit PCX screen shot to the race directory,
Screen      just like SVGA version: ICR01.PCX, ICR02.PCX...; note
that it always starts at ICR01 and overwrites any
existing PCX from a previous session.

Alt+C:      Enables mouse cursor for "pick" feature.
