ok not everybody cares... granted-
but for those who do, can anyone tell me the logic (other than MONEY
and AIR time) why CART decides near the end of some races that run
long to change then to 2 hour TIMED events rather than run the full
distance?

here's my suggestion... make 'em ALL 2 hour events! then those that
run up to that point finish on TIME, and if they happen to be clean
(dont watch todays race) the fan gets a little more for his money!

and you dont change the program in mid stream... c'mon officials its
not rocket science-

Thats all gonna be moot pretty soon anyways.
next years CBS/SV package has a mimimum 2.5 hour time slot,.. 500 mile races
will have a minimum 3.5 hr time slot...

the race lenght formula they are currently using will be just fine next year
as well.

BTW, Glad to see servia is okay after that shunt... it was ***....

Well it may be moot full stop after next year, when there are no
engines available for CART in 2003...

THey just don't decide they race will be a timed event.  EVERY CART race
has to be finished in two hours.  They only declare a timed event when the
laps left vs time left looks bad.  They try and announce it early enough so
that teams working on pit & fuel strategies won't be caught out.
So technically they ARE all timed events, but the distances they race are
long enough to fill the broadcast window even when there isn't a-lot of
yellows.  Cart strategy is different from F1 in that they can adjust the
fuel mapping while driving and change strategies on the fly.  F1 is limited
to fuel changes during upcomming pitstops.

Some engine makers may be dropping out, but I suspect we will see others
jumping in to fill the void.  AFAIK the new formula is basically the
same as the IRL formula, so I wouldn't be surprised if some current and
former IRL engine makers ended up supplying CART in 2003.

FORD would be smart to stick around. Cosworth is rumoured to be willing to
supply NA champcar motors if they can get someone to badge them,... (about 7
million a year...) Toyota may stick around, if CART goes with a completely
(bleahhh, what shitty sounding motors, they sound like an old pickup with a
busted manifold ) IRL type formula,... The problem is that damned Niki
Lauda. He wants Cosworth to blow off CARt and concentrate on his Jaguar
progeam for F1,.. Selfish little ***,...

Rumour also is that Dainler/Chrylser wants back in,.. Possibly a Dodge motor
in CART... That would be allright....

CART will find some new manufacturers, im pretty sure of that. The problem
is timing. 2 years to get new manufacturers online AND with a race motor is
pretty damned fast....

It's similar, but not identical. No rev limit is one thing, but they
still haven't released any details. Problem is that GM and Nissan
aren't really interested in CART from what they've said. And Toyota
are not really keen to get back in either.

And yeah, that timed race thing certainly sucks for those drivers who
had fuelled up for the finish. But it gives the results a bizarre
twist.

Ford have rasied the possibility of beig a solo supplier with 2.65l
turbo "spec" motors, at $2m a pop, if there is no one else in 2003.
Depends if CART is interested in saving the series ir not really...
