VROC-my first experience

by SpeedFree » Sun, 28 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I tried VROC for the first time today and it was really quite good... I
think I need to tweak the settings on my pc but I was getting pretty good
connections.

I have some questions....

When I'm in practice I see people connecting and disconnecting etc. Can you
leave
GPL running and go out to windows?

Where do people usually chat? In the game or Yahoo or APEX or ICQ?

I had a good race against R. McColl from South Africa at Zandvoort - he was
in a Lotus, I was driving a Ferrari. Boy was he fast.

Anyone got any tips for me? i.e. where/how to chat after a race.

Generally speaking, the connects/disconnects are people with
marginal connections to the host.  GPL will drop you out of an
online game if the latency gets too high.  GPL pretty well takes
over the computer... offhand I know of no way to 'window out' (or
Alt-Tab).

The after-race chat is unfortunately a tad lacking in VROC, but
this is the  nature of the beast.  Sometimes folks will hang
around in the 'chat pad' after the race, but many will just bail
out.  Nevertheless, as time goes by and you get to know the
regulars you can at least have a couple moments of post-race (and
pre-race) chit chat.  The Yahoo site is mostly for help and info,
as is the Apex site.  I haven't seen ICQ being too popular with
the VROC crowd.  Bottom line is we don't have a common place to
hoist a cold one after the race and needle each other ;-)

Yeah, a lot of those folks are fast <g>.

NTT is one such place. With an hour long practice session and plenty of post
race chat there's more than ample opportunity for a little camaraderie! Give
it a try! See the thread entitled "NTT World Championship Heads For The
Beach" for all the details.

The irc channel #gpl on ircnet might turn into such a place if people
would frequent it more. I too enjoy a bit of post race chat, but many
people just leave without even so much as a word of "cheers" to the
host.

Cheers,
