Never mind, Goy - the days are getting longer up in your part of the planet
and soon you'll actually see the sun for a couple of weeks!

THE best "car" movie of all!
Crikey - I laugh every time I play that movie - particularly at the plight
of the motor-cyclist. :)
"Gumball" kicked that other one (with Bert Reynolds) into the weeds, in my
opinion.

Bruce.

Ah....but "Cannonball" had Farrah Fawcett and Adrienne Barbeau, not to
mention people like Jack Elam, Dean Martin, Sammy Davies Jr and Jamie
Farr, not to mention...Brock Yates

Oh yeah - and Cinematography ;)...

I watched a great documentary on Citizen Kane a few years back, and
it's remarkable when you find out that alot of the filming was done on
borrowed sets from other films.  Also realize that we're seeing the
movie with jaded eyes - some of the things done in that movie
practically invented a new language of modern filmmaking.

True, true. Worth owning (which I do) just for those aspects - particularly
Farrah's aspects. :)
I reckon I just found Gumball to be funnier, is all.

If I were to make an analogy, I'd say "Metropolis" (or M for that
matter) was to Eraserhead as Citizen Kane was to 2001.

Well, I've only seen Gumball once, while "slightly" under the influence,
so the story line escapes me at the moment, maybe I ought to find it
somewhere and have a second look

Steve Smit

Making of Grand Prix, 1966

by Steve Smit » Sun, 14 Sep 2003 21:59:24

Short version:  First time Garner went by (he insisted on doing the stunt
himself) with the car on fire, the crowd sat on its hands, which
Frankenheimer didn't notice until he screened the dailies (he had been
directing several camera positions during the shooting of the scene).
Furious, JF booked another day at Brands, and brought the extras back just
for the reaction shot.  He expected the worst 'cuz this time there was no
car on fire (Frank Gardner, I think, just drove past in a GT-40), no Garner,
and a much smaller crew, so he promised the extras tea and cakes if they
performed well (i.e., BIG).  He waved across the track, indicating a tea
truck parked by itself at the pit exit.  As Gardner approached Paddock at
full chat, JF signalled his explosives expert who pressed a button which
blew the tea truck to smithereens.  The crowd jumped to its feet amidst
cries of "Holy shite," Oh, no!" and "It can't be!"  "Cut! Print!" muttered
JF between clenched teeth, and stalked off in his signature huff.

You didn't miss much.  Same basic storyline as Paul Bartel's "Death Race
2000" (now THERE'S a cult film!).

I choose to beleive that this is a true story.

It definitely deserves to be.  ;o)
