Or you were thinking of Le Mans earlier this year?

Yep, Amazon says it'll be released on my birthday! Yay!
But I reallllly wish they'd release the movie itself on DVD. Man, it would
be amazing with my front projector setup.

It is no more a "pathetic soap opera" than many other major movies of that
era and, as one who saw it three times within a month of its release in
Cinerama, I can tell you that we couldn't give a rat's arse about the
storyline, anyway!
Bruce.
What's your opinion on 'Vanishing Point' then?
Malc.
Plus, on DVD we can skip the soap opera and get right to the good stuff!
Instant gratification.

I didn't realize Driven had racing sequences that were up to GP
standards. And GP's racing sequences were 25 years ahead of their
time already (hell, probably 30 when you think about how***poor F1
coverage was on TV until the late 90's).
I really don't see what's bad about the story, either. Pete Aarons is
clearly based largely around the real life John Surtees with a few
things added to make it more exciting, and the love story aspects are
less the focus of the movie and used more as support for the overall
theme of driver dedication and bravery in the face of danger. I'm
sure the film also played some role in providing a push for Stewart's
safety campaign that was started shortly after the Spa race that
appears in the movie. I just watched the first half of the film a few
days ago, and the in-car views of the crashes at Masta still take my
breath away.
Overall, I'd be incredibly pleased if a movie came out that combined
the trend-setting cinematics of GP (including both the camerawork and
the incredible Jarre-penned score) with a similarly well-constructed
plot that not only mirrored much of the lives of the real drivers but
also made a quite serious social statement about racing itself. Very
few of the films that are considered classics are anywhere near as
influential or thought provoking as GP remains to this day, and from a
film student perspective I have no problems ranking it right next to
anything done by Orson Welles or Stanley Kubrick as one of the top
films ever made.
