3D graphics cards and bus mastering

by Wolfgang Prei » Fri, 21 Nov 1997 04:00:00

With Ubisoft's F1 and CART PR in stores, it's about time to upgrade my
graphics card. I have a question to those in the know (Eric Busch
comes to mind), though:

I understand some 3D cards use "bus mastering." (I have no clear idea
what "bus mastering" is, but it seems to be pretty important. I'd be
interested in a brief explanation, however. Does it have something to
do with DMA?) Furthermore, I have heard that (most) Intel chipsets
support true bus mastering, whereas non-Intel chipsets only emulate
this feature. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. With my
luck, it probably won't work... ;)

My question now is: What kind of card will probably work with my FIC
PA2007 board (VIA VP2 chipset)? If I'm not mistaken, 1st gen.
rendition cards do use bus mastering, but they aren't my first choice
anyway. What about rendition 2x00 based cards? Or, specifically 3DFX
(Voodoo) cards? Thanks for your input.
