F1RS Spa, what a blast!

by 'John' Joao Sil » Wed, 25 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I just got done doing a couple of hours running F1RS at the Spa track
and I just can't believe the rush F1RS gives on this track WOW!

Diving into Eau Rouge at full throttle 6th gear, fighting at the limits of
traction to keep yourself from spinning out, bouncing the tires first off the
inside curb then the outside and then you realise you made it without
spinning and are heading up the hill at full blast!!

Man this sim is fun.

Sorry if this is old news for those of you in Europe that have owned F1RS
for a while, but I just can't believe I waited this long to order this sim
here in North America, so far it blows away even GP2 as far as a fun
driving experience and driving e***ment goes.

I'm actually mad that Ubisoft hasn't been able to release this here yet,
but in reality if I had been able to pick this up earlier in the year,
my work and school projects would no doubt have suffered tremendously
as a result.

I think once F1RS comes out in N.A. we will no doubt be hearing from
others who have finally been able to get their hands on this hot title,
who like me will be kicking themselves for not having gotten their hands
on it 3 months ago.

Back to the track for me, and keeping my fingers crossed that Bernie's
stupidity won't kill the real F1 race at Spa this year. Only 13 days until
Melbourne :-)

Cheers.

Spa is definitely one of the jewels in F1RS' crown, very well modelled
with the elevations etc. Just wait until you try Spa in Grand Prix
Legends - Eau Rouge is a wooooooooaaaaaaa shiiiiiiiiiiit type of
corner, and I can WELL understand why it was treated with such awe in
those days :-)

I heard a rumour today that Spa has now been confirmed - can anyone
confirm the confirmation?

Cheers!

BBC Ceefax p.360 reported a couple of days ago that Spa was back on for
this year though I think they still have to sort out the tobacco
advertising issue for future years.

You're right, it seems to be. I had this discussion over on Compuserve
recently, with Richard Walker, Achim and the like. We were discussing
whether any sim adequately conveyed the drama of tackling a corner
like Eau Rouge. F1RS does a pretty good job, but I've never had an off
there or felt the car to be on the limit - same in GP2.

In GPL the feeling is much more, primarily because you are really
fighting the car. If F1RS accurately conveys the 90s as GPL conveys
the 60s, I wondered if the experience of Eau Rouge was more pronounced
then also? Certainly the possibility for an accident is immense, as it
seems to be anywhere at Spa. My sim driver would be dead any number of
times with the accidents I've had :-)

Cheers!

John.....
Brabham once said that Eau Rouge scared him shitless (or words to that
effect) but that it was necessary to take the corner as fast as possible in
order to keep the speed up for the climb.  Upwards of several seconds per
lap could be lost by not approaching that section of the circuit with some
considerable bravado and soiled underwear!
Even now it is a scary corner but the skid-mark level has been mollified
somewhat by the addition of run-off and gravel areas.....something that, of
course, did not exist in the 60s.
I have set up my car (F1RS) so that this corner would be frightening if it
were in real life!  It goes from one kerb to the other, bottoms and then
goes light and each lap, as I do the run downhill, I wonder if I'll get
through it :-)

Great stuff.....and if GPL gives the same sensation (or better) it will be
incredible.

I Have to say I find Spa one the *best* circuits in any racing
game/sim.

Eau Rouge must be one of the best corners ever? I could never quite
take it flat out in GP1 or GP2, and I found F1 to be totally
unrealistic, but to be able to take it flat out (just) in F1RS is
fantastic. A real challenge on every lap to get it *just* right.

It sure has. It must have been confirmed before Tuesday because it was
in Autosport today, but I only just heard about it. Strange, I'd have
thought people would be shouting about it... A season without Spa is
Hell on Earth!

In GP2, I can take it flat out in 6th gear, going through at ~295km/h.
The tyres are gone after 3 laps, tough.  For me, that section is
definitely not easy, and the car is very much on the edge.

Would have been par for the course for Formula 1....the series that
seems intent on killing itself.

Man how I miss the days of Senna/Prost/Mansell/Patrese/Berger....these
days the racing is just not the same....or maybe I just miss
Senna....man I loved to watch him qualify.

A man after my own heart - the in-car footage of his Monaco qualifying
lap is utterly stupefying, and I have never yet heard a better
description of a sportsman being in "the zone" as Senna describing his
almost dream-like state during those laps. To be two seconds faster
over a qualifying lap than your own team-mate is incredible, and
especially when that team-mate is Prost and he in turn is 1.5 seconds
ahead of the next guy!

In most sports there tends to be a person or a team that is ***
during a given time, although U.S. sports tend to have rules to
prevent that (NASCAR rule changes, football drafts etc). To have four
drivers of the calibre of Mansell, Prost, Piquet and Senna all racing
together was indeed a joy to behold, especially with people like
Berger and Patrese also snapping at their heels, but unfortunately may
never be repeated. In the past we had Fangio and Moss, Clark and
Stewart, but I think late 80's F1 was probably the pinnacle, IMO at
least.

I loved Mansell's description of driving the Williams Honda Turbo,
which had so much turbo lag that you had to put your foot down a
second or so before you wanted the power to kick in. If you got it
wrong the power would burst in like an on/off switch before you had
exited the corner and drive you straight into the wall :-)

Cheers!

Hi John

If you can find someone to lend you his BMW 2002 turbo, you can
experience the same kind of turbo lag, of course it doesn`t "quite" have
the same power, but the "entertaining" roadholding and the lag should
make for an interresting ride :-D
