CMR 4 Demo

by me » Mon, 01 Mar 2004 21:15:51

I've recently downloaded the demo, and was just wondering if anybody else
experiences a, ( this is the best way I can describe it), drag/stutter or
strange slowing down, and then 'catch-up' of the graphics? The frame rate
seems  high,  and i have tried reducing graphics to low in the game, without
sucess.
I have 512mb ram, xp1600, geforce4mx400

Apart from that problem, the game runs fine. It's oviously an improvement on
cmr3, but there again, that wouldn't be difficult. The handling seems,
'assisted' though, in too many ways.

Any thoughts on the graphics issue would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Disable vsync in the Direct3D control panel.

...but those with fast PCs like a 2.0GHz+ and a 9700 or better should
probably leave it on - looks much smoother...

Doesn't V-Sync limit your framerates ? Not ideal if you have a quick PC.
Just asking.

IIRC doesnt v-synch lock the frame rate to the monitors refresh rate to
prevent tearing?  So if youre running 100hz monitor refresh and your FPS
doesnt go over 100fps you should technically be ok right?  The real problem
begins with the 60hz refresh and fast machines with v-synch enabled.

First off, I'm not sure what the real difference is between 100 frames and
60.  The debate rages.

So actually, I don't think enabling v-sync with machines running at 60hz
(FPD, mostly) is a "real problem".

I'd agree.  I dont see that much of a diff going from 60 to 100 fps.  The
key is when I get into a high detail area that eats FPS.  I have a fudge
factor which keeps my frame rate above 60 in a worst case scenario and so I
must adjust my refresh rate to the "best" case scenario.

Something else I heard but really dont know if its a REAL factor but I liked
the sound of it ;).  The Physics engine in NR2003 is 57hz so I keep my FPS
above that "magic" number to maximize performance.

vsync locks the frame rate to the monitor's refresh rate.  This gives the
maximum smoothness possible and avoids ugly tearing artifacts.  However, if
your PC can't keep up that frame rate, it will drop back to half the refresh
rate and that's what produces stuttering.  If your running a very fast PC
that can constantly maintain a frame rate higher than your monitor refresh
rate, then turning on vsync is the icing on the cake in terms of image
quality.  Otherwise you're probably best to turn it off....

I'd agree: that's pretty much it.

Nice description, thanks.
What would be the best bet for an LCD monitor running through a DVI input
that is a constant 60hz refresh ?

It shouldnt be at 60hz refresh....why dont you change it to the usual max
with them of 70,72 or 75 ...?

I think refresh rates are not an option when using LCD's through DVI input.
You can't alter refresh rates

I sense another CRT vs LCD thread looming. You promised not to redTed... :)

Tis ok. We are a mature bunch of ***s on RAS - not like the kiddies on the
games.action group - even DGF is quite well behaved these days since he was
finally assimilated into the Papy fanboy club... :)
