F1RS performance question.

by AKhan420 » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hello
I am going to buy a new computer,  it is a P2 350mhz which comes with a Real 3D
starfighter 8MB (intel i740 chipset) .  can someone out there who has a similar
configuration tell me what framerate I can expect to get with F1RS?  At the
moment I am using a pentium 233 with an ATI All in wonder,  and I must say that
the performance is really poor.  In order to get an acceptable framerate,  I
have to use the lowest draw distance setting,  and turn of all graphic options
such as the sky,  racing line, mirrors, replay,  and I have to race against six
competitors.  Any help at all will be useful.

Thanks in advance
Cheers.

I use a PII300 with the Diamond G460 (it also has the i740 chipset and
8mb)  and it flies just fine.  Dont know the exact FPS but it has to
above 20fps easily.  I must add that I have 96mb of RAM and that is
what will REALLY help the frame rate.  Also, i have just recently
started using a Voodo2 card, and I must say I like it better than the
D3D version on the g460.

Wheels down, pointy end forward!!

Expect performance to be poor on any hardware until you add
a 3dfx card.

Your best bett would be to get yourself a Voodoo II 3dfx card, it will
give you some very decent frame rates.
I got a AMD K6 166Mhz and a Voodoo II from Creative Labs and apart from
the start, the framerates are really pretty decent and very playable,
even at highest detail-level, I think a 3dfx-card does F1RS or it's
successor RS2 more good than a faster computer!
Allthough I wouldn't refuse the latter either ;-)

You can do a lot better than this for $300,000 - have you considered a Cray?
