GPL D3D/OGL graphics puzzle

Why do some GPL tracks that don't look that detail-rich such as say
Levin or Lakeside refuse to perform well on my system with Direct3D,
but perform adequitly with OpenGL (with reduced details).

Other tracks which have more visually pleasing looks (such as Clermont
Ferrand and St. Jovite) work just fine?

GF 4200ti  (60.?? drivers)
Win98se
DX 9.0b
AMD Duron 1.2

OK, not state of the art equipment but then neither are the first 2
track examples.

Is it something in the tools/construction techniques for some tracks?
