I need help with Nascar2 and Win95

I am having problems while running Nascar2 in Win95. After anywhere from
10-65 laps into a race (off-line) the game freezes and the hard disk light
comes on for about 10 seconds after the hard drive does its thing the games
instantly starts up again.
Can anyone provide any help with this????

    Thanks,
    Chuck Oberman

Check both win95 and your bios for any power management features that may
be enabled, disable them if they are. Also make sure you don't have a
screen saver on.

Have you turned the screen saver off?  I'm using a joystick and win95
doesn't recognise it as an input device (in terms of being idle - it
works fine in games).  If you are using a joystick or possibly a wheel
(I'm not rich enough to afford one so I don't know if they suffer the
same problem) that could be the problem.

Edit the shortcut and turn off "Enable Screen Saver".

Another possibility is that Windows is messing with the swap file.  Since
you're running under Win95, it likes to stick its fingers in wherever it can
in managing your resources.  Especially after a large number of laps in a
race, the replay info takes up a great deal of memory, so Win95 may be
swapping stuff to disk to free up more RAM.

It sounds as if you have Win95 setup to handle virtual memory in the
default mode (i.e., let Windows manage...).  This means that Win95 has
set aside a certain amount of diskspace for the swap file, but as you
progress in your race, the amount of memory required for the replay is
now larger than that amount of diskspace.  Win95 now must "claim" more
diskspace.  If your disk is in need of defrag'ging, this process can
really hold up the train.  Even defragging won't stop the lag.

2 solutions:

1) Specify in the System Properties -> Virtual Memory that you want
control of your virtual memory.  Set both the minimum and maximum to be
the same.  In your system.ini file make sure you have the following
lines:

[vcache]
MinFileCache=4096
MaxFileCache=4096

The numbers should be equal.  Use 1024 for each 8 meg of memory
installed in your computer.  32 meg would by 32/8 * 1024 = 4096

2) Run N2 in a pure DOS environment (i.e., re-boot to DOS).  This is the
preferred solution.
