IRL Heat project terminated

I regret to inform the sim racing community and fans of the Indy
Racing League that the IRL Heat project has been terminated -- no
future updates or patches will be developed in support of this effort,
and the IRL Heat 2000 and IRL Heat 2001 files have been removed from
all Internet sources within my control. The termination of the IRL
Heat project comes at the request of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
See the IRL Heat Web site for the full details:

So little ol John Bodin was a threat to the spawn of Satan was he?
somehow I think "request" was the wrong word to use...more like:
demanded????   Hey John, even tho I'm not a fan of the league, I do
appreciate the close racing they get AND ESPECIALLY your efforts.  Thanks
for putting that mod out there......and may 'He With NO Name' rot in hell.

I'll second that.  Judging by the # of fans the IRL has watching any
race, you'd think they'd encourage this.......but that would require
rational thinking, which goes without saying doesn't exist there.

John, I really hope Audi doesn't step up next and say the AutoUnions have to
go!

Stephen

p.s. sorry for no feedback on the SOH thing.  The combination of a hellish
workload and a wimpy computer made it all rather futile, but I certainly
liked what I initially saw.  Really liked it.  Almost enough to go computer
shopping.

I don't think the message was that bad, actually. The first paragraph
almost looks like they are sorry. They do explain that the availability
of the mod means they were breaking their contract with another developer
which presumably has exclusive rights.

My thoughts exactly. It was a much nicer letter than the ubisoft/mod
community debacle a while ago.

Blame it on the lawyers Dave, everything has to do with copyrights these
days, course, the mighty dollar has something to do with it as well, but
somehow I get the impression that people in the auto racing industry
doesn't really care what "we" do with 3rd party stuff, *until* someone
starts screaming about having paid good money for licensing rights, in
which case they *have* to go out there and protect their copyrights or
face a law suit for contract breach and what not

Shame it hits 3rd party not for profit guys like John and his team,
having talked to Jan Kohl about the Daytona project "The Pits" was doing
a few years ago, I have a good feeling how frustrating is facing a
lawsuit for doing something for others without even making money from it

On the other side, does this mean more effort can be but into other
NHeat mods such as AussieV8's ? :-)

Beers and cheers

John --

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this effort. I have to agree
with several others that the letter you got from IRL was hardly what one
could term a "request", but you have put the best face on it. Also, like
many others, I am disappointed in the raging egos of everyone involved
in this ridiculous CART/IRL split, perhaps Tony George most of all.

Be that as may, I'd be willing to bet that whatever "*** company" IRL
is working with, the product will be a stinker, as have most games been
when the real-life franchise is calling the shots. A labor for profit
can never have the intrinsic quality of a labor of love.

Sorry to see all of your hard work go to shit, John. Even though I really
can't stand TG and the way he handled (caused) the split, it's a shame
that the IRL'ers won't have a quality sim to call their own.

Warlock!

The "Sorry, but there's another game under development" line of bs is the
first one always used in these circumstances.

Bob Davidso

IRL Heat project terminated

Several thoughts on this:

1. Thanks, Jon, for providing a decent sim-mod of a basically ignored
segment of racing. I sincerely appreciate the recreational enjoyment
that you have provided to me free-of-charge.

2. I wonder if you are really creating a breach of contract or if this
is just some sort of power-play. I'm suspicious, since your effort is
non-profit and you have not entered into any contractual agreement
with IMS.

3. I have no confidence that a competent sim of Indy Racing is going
to be produced. Other licensed efforts have stunk, so why should we
believe that this one will be any different? The sim racing
community's "need" which had been previously unaddressed gave birth to
the IRL Heat projects. Now we are to believe there were plans all
along to meet this need.

4. Using the logic offered, I don't see how the sim community is free
to produce any cars, mods, tracks, etc. of anything. I think if you
look hard enough you'll find that everything associated with
motorsports is the intellectual property of somebody. Using the logic
offered I find it hard to believe we're not continually breaching
contracts or violating somebody's property.

5. When Ubisoft did not have a license to produce an F1 game, they
produced Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2. The names were changed
to disguise what sort of racing was being simulated but simmers soon
provided their own seasons, etc. restoring appropriate driver names,
car names, etc. I assume what Ubisoft did was legal. Likewise, I would
think that you might be free to do the same if you choose.  Instead of
calling the mod IRL Heat 2001 you might call it LOW (Lame Open Wheel)
Racing, as in "How LOW can ya get!"
