GPL control problem

by Doug Gordo » Mon, 12 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I'm using a TSW connected to the game port on my AWE64 (tried to install a
C-H card a while ago but had PnP problems that I never could solve). Anyway,
I seem to get an occasional control "twitch" while driving. The driver's
arms will suddenly flash as though I turned the wheel full lock or
something, but only for an instant. Sometimes this also causes the car to
twitch to one side. Obviously, the program is picking up a bogus reading
every once in a while. GPL is tough enough to drive straight without this
happening! Is this more likely to be a game port issue, driver, or even a
pot?

Also, has anyone noticed any difference if you choose DirectX for the
control input vs. the "generic" driver? I'm using the generic one right now.

Sounds like your steering pot needs a good shot of something like Radio
Shack's Tuner Control Cleaner and Lubricant to me.

I have the same problem but it occurs in ICR2 only. GPL and Nascar2 it does not
happen. I tried cleaning the pots but still get the twitch in ICR2. Shoot,
really like the sim, but do not play it much anymore due to frustration.

This I think is GPLs way of telling you that you are at the limit of
adhesion the arms twitch to let you know this very important thing, thats
why the car twitchs also. Very neat good thing to look out for eh.

Hi Doug,
I have the same problem using the Direct Driver. I switched to the
generic and the problem is gone. But cleaning or changing out the
potentiometer is still not a bad idea.

An intermittent jerk of the controls while using the Direct Input driver
can be caused by "polling with interrupts enabled".

Go into the Game Controllers control panel, hit the "advanced" page, and
uncheck that feature. Note... to actually get it turned off, some
systems require you to go back in to the control panel and uncheck it a
second time... For whatever reason, the first attempt to disable it
doesn't always take.
