I've read a lot about this game here. It is a bit old, but in what way is it
good? Will it work on XP and Pentium 4?

Thanks

It sucks...  the life right out of you!

All rhetoric aside I think the primary draw of GPL has always been the
reliable online play.  Prior to the recent crop of NR2003 mods it was really
the only robust way to do road racing online.  And yes it will work fine
with XP and a P4.  You will need a patch for the increased CPU speed
(www.papy.com) and some people have found they have to have indexing turned
on in XP to get it to install.

BTW those are really beautiful photos at your website.

Hi, it's simply the best simulator ever! Works fine on XP. Try it :)

Why do you ask?

GPL is the benchmark of sims...about a million posts here about it since it
came out oh so long ago...

Just get it, though...you won't be disappointed.

Yes, it is a bit old.  But so is fine Wine :)
It is good IF you like the most realistic simulator ever made, and are man
enough to handle it :)
XP and P4 should be no problem.  Never has been for me.

GPL takes patience, dedication and pure desire to tame the beast.

All for around $10 these days :)

Make sure you get the GPL patches from papy.com

http://www.papy.com/framesets/downframe.htm

then head on over to www.racesimcentral.com , jump into the GPL forum.
There are a ton of updates for GPL, the standard graphics will look a
bit dated but once you get the track and car updates, dash updates,
etc it will be quite impressive.

Even better, get Magnus's "GPL all-in-one patch" from the latter site if
you want to run it on XP.
Just installed it on my brother's XP system with no trouble.

Yep, don't forget to visit gplea.org. This is a must-see.

It's good in the way that it's a total challenge, great fun once you've
learned to drive it, and puts most other "simulators" to shame  :)

Yes, it should ok with those os's.

It is rather an old driving sim (its NOT a game, really, its NOT!) but
despite that, it is still one of the most rewarding and playable sims out
there.

The graphics on a fast pc are gorgeous, the physics are some of the best
ever, and there are loads (truckoads) of mods, eg: new add on tracks,
cars, skins, set-ups, graphics packs, etc, etc.

And it has probably one of the best and most stable on-line modes of any
game.sim ever.

Go get it man, what are you waiting for?

Thanks for al your advice. Now I know for sure I am going to look for the
game in the shops (it is not widely available here in the Netherlands, but I
will search everywhere till I find it).
Thanks again.

You get a lot of hype about GPL here because people have been enjoying this
game for 5 years and therefore they tend to look askance at anything new.
But here are some undeniable facts that any objective person would admit to:
a) it's not the best simulator every made, most likely that title belongs to
NR 2003; b) no matter what you do with graphics upgrades it does not and
will not ever look as good as a more recent sim because the pale color
palette and flat lighting apparently can not be changed; c) there are known
inadequacies in the tire model that all the fast guys exploit - they run
unrealistic setups and drive it like an arcade game and as a result are a
good 2 seconds faster than anyone who sets up their car and drives it in a
realistic manner.  Don't get me wrong, it is a truly fun game and if you can
find it cheap it is worth getting.  Certainly if you like a difficult
challenge GPL is it.  Just don't expect it to live up to the hype.  I'm not
trying to talk you out of it, I'm just saying that realistically there is no
reason to go searching through every computer shop in the Netherlands just
to find it.  If you want the best road racing simulator ever made just get
NR 2003 and download one of the Trans Am mods instead.  When I go back and
forth between the two I find GPL feels absolutely numb compared to the TA
physics, and I can't stand looking at the washed out graphics in GPL
anymore, despite having all the add-ons.

"Is grand prix legends any good?"

"yes."

It's okay to own more than one sim, just make sure gpl is one of them ;-)

   Maybe, but

It is 5 years old and people will still tell you it's #1. To see the most
revolutionary piece of sim racing software of all time - get GPL. Any sim
racer without a copy of GPL is not a sim racer at all. And the
tracks.................it's worth it just for the 174 corner, 14+ mile
Nurburgring! And then there's Spa, Monza, etc when they were not made to be
safe! :) Owning this sim is like owning a piece of history, both for the
time period it represents and the history of GPL in the sim market. It is a
giant on both counts. It's still the only open wheeler sim that can be raced
properly (20 online at once) to this day. We can thank the FIA***heads for
that since they won't allow online racing of sims based on modern F1.

Haqsau has given a bit of an impression that GPL is not realistic -
wrong. Papy admitted that the tyre model was less than perfect (with a few
years of 20/20 hindsight I might add) and it seems some have let this effect
their perspective. The sense of realism is extreme.

Simple answer - get GPL or miss out on something the rest of us who have
been around since day 1 of release (and even the odd beta copies pre
release) have marveled over the last 5 years! GET IT!
