Assuming we are talking Voodoo5 ...
I found disabling "Geometry Assist" under 3df/xTools Advanced Features -
Direct3D then rebooting did the trick for me using the last "official"
drivers (1.04) for both the demo and retail version of F1-2002.

I used to use generic because the direct driver would drift over the course
of a race. I have retired to occasional (not so) hotlapper though... so far
it's working fine.
