Hawaii Question.

by Dan Drur » Wed, 15 May 1996 04:00:00

I asked this question once and no one responded, so
I'm trying one more time.  Does anyone know if Papyrus
is going to have a toll-free number or local numbers for
access to Hawaii when it goes live.  I love Hawaii, but I
can't afford to pay Long Distance charges on top of
Papyrus's fees.

Thanks,
Dan

I don't think it's been decided yet, but local numbers are the most likely
situation (IMHO).

I have heard that Papyrus is looking into a 1-800 number or local access numbers. They
want to keep the cost down for us as much as possible. If anyone at Papy is listening, I
would suggest local numbers and a monthly fee of about $20-$30 dollars for unlimited
use. Please let us know when a non-long distance charged number will be available.

I suspect Papyrus will go with a flat monthly fee along with an hourly
fee.  Having unlimited access for only $20/month will cause a lot of
people to just hang around all day hogging the service.

I'm hoping for about $10-15/month plus an hourly rate of about
$2/hour.
Bill.

I would much prefer a flat rate of even $50/month that the hourly rate.
Although you are right Bill, people may just log on and stay there if
the price is set too low.

Stop saying that Bill.   1$ per hour will be plenty ;-).  $10-$15 per
month sounds ok though.  So.  Papyrus you now have my formal permision to
charge only, and not more than, $10.00 per month and $1.00 per hour beyond,
mmmmmm....  say 5(?) for your Hawaii service.  No there's no need to wait
for it to finish beta ;-).

Instead of having 1 server and many local nodes to that server.. how about placing
servers in different cities. This could solve the problem of large masses dialing
into the single server, which must be deadly to the cpu. I know of 1 company that is
successfully running this type of service with a very popular direct dial gamming
service.

A monthly flat rate should only include a certain number of minutes
online.  After you meet your quota, you should be charged regular LD
charges.  I figure that about 7 hours per week would be plenty for me.
That would be 10-14 races.  You should be notified everytime you log in
how many minutes are left on your quota.

There are 7 race servers for Hawaii (last time I talked to a Papyrus
engineer) as well as separate servers for the race scheduler and BBS. If
things get too busy, they can add more servers. At the moment, they are
controlling the number of new accounts to prevent the system from
overloading while they ramp up. I think the response to Hawaii surprised
even Papyrus. Just imagine what it's going to be like with NASCAR
sanctioning leagues. <g>
