Rendition II verdict?

Rendition II verdict?

by Dave Henri » Thu, 25 Dec 1997 04:00:00

What is the general impression about the V2100 chipset?  Is it equal
to the older V1000 or does it produce faster rates in Papy sims?  I know
about the ICR2 problems and possible fixes, but I'm more concerned about
the performance issue.  And is Hercules gonna be first out with a V2200
chip vid card??
   Any experts??

It definitly produces higher fps. ICR2 never drops lower than 30fps with full
field and all graphic details on, even during the pace lap. Also N2 runs
faster. No more stuttering at short tracks.
The only thing that disturbs me: There is no possibilty to increase the screen
refresh in DOS. You have to live with the default 60Hz. Is there a tool that
allows adjusting the screen refresh as it had been for the V1000?

Dave, The Hercules Thriller 3-d card (using the V-2200 chip) is due out
"very soon".  No, really!!  I have had this card on order for a week or 2,
and have spoken with knowledgeable people at Hercules who told me that the
card design in completed and the cards are in production.  They expect to
start shipping around Jan 1.  The frame rate is much better on the V-2100
and V-2200 than the older 1000 cards.  BTW, the V-2200 is supposed to be
about 15% faster than the V-2100 from what I read in a magazine comparison a
few months ago.

Computer *** World has a nice article on 3-D cards in a recent issue.
They compare the 2D and 3D performance of a lot of the recently released
cards.  I don't have the issue here, but it's the one with the Falcon 4 info
on the cover. (current issue or last)

You know I've seen several comparisons of the V2100 and most say it is fast.
Then they throw out some benchmarks and it doesn't seem that good.  Compared to
the Riva cards.  I really don't care about 2d much since most *** is going
the 3d.  It is good to hear the V2100 is better than the 1000(although not as
much as pre-release hype seemed to suggest.)  I really would go for the V2200
except if I upgrade it will be with a VERY short shoestring...Thanks for your
