turns out my problem is caused by 'theuspits superpatch', it installes
new mip files for s_armco, i took them out of the folder, and hey
presto, no more magical 'appearing right in front of me armco' (it
does look a bit chunkier now though.
the no mipmap patch was interesting, but i found the extra sfx to be
annoying ;-)
