Well folks, I was looking forward to this race as I very rarely have the
chance to race rascar. That's how it is with family and all, and I'd love to
do a same type of series on weekdays, maybe around 20.00 CET so the kid's
gone to bed :)

Anyway, I was looking good & comfortable having qalled fourth and found I
could keep pace nicely. Unfortunately I was hit on a restart by someone
losing it in 2nd - a normal racing accident, and the domino effect of course
also made sure I got a real thump from behind. After that my car felt like
the gas was full of caffeine, even after repairs. Ultimately this led to
uncontrollable entry oversteer which made me spin twice to bring out the
yellows. Sorry about that! That's why I decided to retire as I was probably
going to have more trouble trying to race my spoilerless VW beetle around
that place.

Looking fwd to racing with you guys again, hopefully soon!

/Matt

Once you get loose at this place, especially without the ability to really
drop the trackbar or change wedge it's really downhill from there. Like I
hinted at in the preview message, I lost the balance too last Tuesday and
ended up parking it.

I was really nervous about this race, because, at the time, I couldn't keep
the fast setup pointing in the right direction either at 70 degrees (68
actually, but surely it's not that sensitive?). But, in my practise before
the race and in the race itself, I really gelled with the car and I was once
again confident enough to attack the corners. Relatively speaking, of
course, because, though I love driving this track, I'm actually not that
fast here.

Ended up having a good, solid run... got involved in your restart accident,
but didn't take much damage and later had only one really scary moment. When
I lapped Larry, he ducked straight back down behind me taking the air off my
spoiler... first time I had it happen like that and I have to say it threw
me a bit. Felt like someone lifted the rear of the car off the track!
Lost a bunch of time to Kyle on the last set of pitstops, partly because he
dropped in off T4 instead of a backstraight entry, which I thought was "de
rigeur" for green flag stops in RASCAR. Anyhow, ran him back down and passed
fairly easily for 2nd with one to go (Kyle was overdriving the entries, IMO,
which, obviously, only makes things worse).

Congrats to winner Neil Charlton and commisserations to Ginger, who disco'd
twice in the closing stages, losing the lead and a bunch of laps. Hard luck
mate, because your strategy was the right one (took my cues about pitting
from you ;-)).

I was the one behind you Matt and I got hit as well (how many were in this
one?) after that I was way too loose so I just dropped out.

I was somewhere in the middle of that mess.  Hit in front and behind,  lost
motor,  done.

I had my first run with you guys and had fun for awhile.  Qualified fifth and
on the green flag, sat in the same spot for 7-8 laps, staying within view of
the leaders.  I got myself loose coming off of turn two, checking up enough to
allow Bamadano (45) to get up on my tail.

He tried a pass on the inside, I challenged back on the outside and he gave me
plenty of room on the exit (thanks!) allowing me to keep position.  We ran nose
to tail for a couple of laps and I again got loose coming off of two, the car
ran down the track a couple of car widths just as Bamadano was making a move.

As I got control of the car I had run him down to the bottom (sorry Bam,
certainly not on purpose) and then lifted and moved high to allow him to pass.
By this time I had pinched him down and I know he wasn't aware that I had given
room.  It looked like he clipped the apron and the front end washed out, moving
up the track.
I was as high as I could go, left side on the groove, right side in the gray
and he just barely tapped my left front with his right rear, he kept going and
I took a hard right into the wall, careening down the track and getting a thump
from Tpaulin, who also kept going.

So that was me who brought out the first yellow.  Left me very slow in the
straights without a hood.  I ended up being a moving road block and was trying
to stay out of everyones way.  I left around lap 69, several laps down.

It was a shame as I was looking foward to racing Dover.  I like the track and
felt competitive.  In practice I ran a lot of laps behind Tpaulin and was
anticipating a long green run with him, as we seemed evenly matched.

Oh well, thanks guys and sorry for those I caused a problem to.

Well described Mike. I indeed was not aware that you had moved up and I was
tryin too hard to stay low and got the apron. Sorry for the hit. Glad you
joined us and hope to see ya next week.

I was whacked in that restart pile up and suffered some damage, but it was
later when I was pushed into the wall and my engine suffered damage that I
decided to retire.

I thought we were changing the damage level from realistic to moderate?

Try de-wedging.  I know, that makes it more loose, but I found that with
both the default qual setup and the fast setup, if I de-wedged it enough to
bring the RF weight down to within a pound or two of the RR weight, it felt
pretty good and didn't seem to go away on me.  With only this change and
some extra tape I was able to drive almost flat out down to the apron on
corner entry in qualifying, just like the real guys were.  And I was able to
run pretty steady mid 23's in an AI race this way, as long as I hit my
markers.  Don't know how that compares to you alien types but it seems to
compare well with real life lap times and it put me solidly ahead of the AI,
which had been auto-set to 98% from a previous race.  Of course this is
offline, so perhaps it might be too loose for online, but I found I could
put the power down as long as I used the banking correctly on exit, I think
that would still work online.  YMMV.

Excellent advice Hal, but RASCAR runs a fixed setup format. I also tried
taking out wedge on Tuesday, but it just wasn't enough. My experiences in
RASCAR suggest I just got rattled and lost my rythm on Tuesday. There's no
amount of setup tweaking that can bring that back.

Mid 23's would have put you in my brackett last Saturday (provided you can
do 'm with an untweaked fast setup)... i.e. picking up the pieces while
scrapping over last place. ;-)

We can't de-wedge - we're running fixed setup.

Haqsa

by Haqsa » Tue, 03 Jun 2003 09:16:18

You can change wedge on a pit stop though, can't you?  Same with the track
bar.  You can't lower the left side in the pits, but you could lower the
right side which would tighten the car up a bit on the exit.  IOW if you run
an online test session and find some combination of wedge, track bar
changes, and tire pressure changes that feels good, then in the race you
make those changes on the first yellow and you're good for the rest of the
race.  Or does fixed setups prevent pit adjustments also?  That would suck,
that's an important part of racing IMO.

Actually, no: you can't change any of that. The only options, in race (you
can adjust steering ratio in the garage), are the amount of fuel, which
tyres to change and whether or not to repair damage, IIRC.

And yes, in some ways and instances that sucks, but in another it brings
parity of some sort.

Tried to miss you, sorry.  Had light motor damage that was repairable.  Not
so fortunate on the restart.  (that's racin)  Was looking forward to it too.
Maybe next week at Pocono.
