Windows 98 - N2 & GP2

by Paul Dudle » Wed, 09 Dec 1998 04:00:00

My PC has recently been upgraded from Windows 95 to Windows 98 and also
has a faster CPU.

N2 and GP2 worked fine previously, now they both lock up when I try to
run them
and I get the black silent screen of death.

Any hints on what to look for? Is there an FAQ or a site somewhere that
I might
be able to work out what is wrong?

Thanks
Paul Dudley

If you're using the Win95 .exe's and you performed a Win95 Upgrade (as
opposed to reformatting and reinstalling everything), during the Win98
Upgrade process, MS decided it best to replace MANY system .dll's with
known, older versions.  Their excuse is they wanted to "make sure that Win98
was on a known, stable platform."  There is a utility with Win98 that tracks
these replacements and informs you of which got replaced and with what
versions.  You MAY be able to spot a .dll that your program needs using the
"Version Conflict Manager."  I can't remember exactly where it is; it's
either deep on the Win98 CD, or in the System Tools menu.

SFC - System File Checker.

Just type SFC from the run option.

This utility can be hazardous and confusing, though.  Be carefull.

Correct. In many cases your best option is to re-install whatever was
broken during the upgrade process.

Could be a few things. You might want to reinstall your video card
drivers. I would first install Standard VGA drivers, reboot, and THEN
reinstall proper drivers. You also might try the Win98 Instant Update
(or whatever it is called) and install the latest DX6.

It also might be as simple as reinstalling GPL and N2.

Another possibility is Win98 and the drivers for your video card aren't
as 'friendly' as in Win95. Check for updated drivers or look into
reference drivers from the company that made your vid card.

ALSO... Win98 might've reassigned the resources for your soundcard. I
don't know how that might affect GPL since it is a Win game (a reinstall
of the game would take care of any config probs there) BUT N2 could have
probs. Run SETUP for N2 to fix any sound config probs. I know from
experience that N2 can fail to start if resources/soundcard changes. I
also can tell you that any time I've reinstalled Win98 on my system I've
had to reinstall GPL.

Just a few quick thoughts...
Good luck,
Alan

Everything I said still applies except I lean toward the soundcard
resources problem even more. I'm so used to seeing GPL posts that as
soon as I saw GP I must've hallucinated the "L" ;-)

GP2 will give you the dreaded black screen if the soundcard resources
are wrong. Run its setup program also. Check what resources your
soundcard is using in Device Manager and then confirm that the two
progys use these setting when you run their Setup.
