GP2 And Windows 98

I have Grand Prix 2, and have been using it fine for the past 4 years.
The best Formula 1 driving sim there is.

But I have recently upgraded my PC and am now using windows 98.
I also upgraded my steering wheel from the Thrustmaster Formula T1 to
the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback one.

It all works fine, (I know I wont get any force feedback!), but this
Wheel only works in Windows, so I have to run the game in windows, which
is fine.  The PC is an Pentium II 450mhz.  The problem is that I can't
save any games, If I do, I always get a DOS4GW Page fault 0EH error and
the came crashes!!

I can save driver names, game states, car set-ups no problem, but
game saves and hot laps always bomb the game out.

I have tried changing the MSDOS memory requirements for the PIF link,
and even down to the point of disabling some of the advanced features on
the Hard Disk controllers, but to no avail.

I seem to remember that when I tried in Windows 95, it did save the
games OK.  Alas I don't want to return to windows 95, as I like the
new features of 98 and have just got it all working together really
well.

Please help!

Regards

I have the same problem, also had in Win95. There is a connection with GP2
Edit, which I have to use in order to participate in the competition at
www.lfrs.com. There is also a connection with the driving aids you have on.
In the case I have at hand right now, with only F5 (ideal line) on, the game
crashes when I go directly to quickrace and save the game while still on the
grid. However when I turn on F1, F2 or F6 first the game can be saved ok and
hotlaps too.
Another thing that may have to do with it is a lot of loading and saving
from and to the same file.

I must say that GP2's behavior is intermittent with regard to this failure,
and every "solution" I thought to have found failed sooner or later.

So what I do (but no 100% garantee):
o    Never save game settings on exit, so f1gstate.sav is never changed.
o    Never save a game over and over to and from the same file, keep a
strict "tree" of saved games.
o    If it still crashes (which it does :-((( ), experiment with driving
aids that are allowed within the rules of the league. Normally I only use
Ideal line and Opposite lock help.

If anyone has found anything better, please let us know, this bug can drive
one nuts. Having done a perfect race only to see the game crash when saving
the results is really frustrating. It even happened to me that I could save
the game at the end of the race, but got the crash when saving the fastest
lap.

GP2 has never crashed on me when playing under Win98 except when I was
using the GP2Lap utility and tried to save a game in progress. I've
always started the game straight from the gp2.exe file and never changed
any pif settings.

This is just my experience...
