ICR2 Speed with Reactor

by clexm.. » Sat, 02 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I have a Dell P5-90 with 16 megs RAM and WIN95, with the Reactor
installed.  In ICR2, my frames frequently drop into the 24-17 range, even
with just 10 cars visible and 2 in back.  I run Indyfast without a
problem.  Am I missing something -- anything I should check to ensure I
have optimized the configuration.  Or am I just stuck with the lowest
speed compatible processor?  I boot with a DOS disk.  Eric?

Thanks,

Chris LeMasters

That doesn't sound that bad for a P90.  Even my P120 which stays near 30
most of the time drops into the mid-20's at times, so I don't think you're
missing anything.  You may want to turn the mirror detail to medium and
turn off the grass textures to help maximize the framerate.

Just to check your machine's setup, what kind of framerates are you getting
in Quake?  If you haven't already done so, goto:
http://www.rendition.com/quake.html and update to version 1.06 (with a 400k
1.01-1.06 patch) and then download the newest VQuake (beta2).  Once in
VQuake, bring up the console (press the ~ key) and type 'timedemo demoX'
where X is 1, 2, or 3.  It will run a demo and report back your average
fps.  Tell me the resolutions and fps your getting (400x300 should be your
best bet for graphics/performance).

that's still better than what I get with my standard 1 meg SVGA card and 16
meg P90 when running the plain vanilla ICR2..

(If I could only convince my wife that we NEED a new video card....)

Take off your case and take a hot soldering iron and melt a couple contacts on
your current video card - INSTANT defect and just cause for a new video card (or
a divorce if you get caught)

Not a bad idea, but I still run Windows 3.1 and i would need to
upgrade to Win95 first. I think she might get a bit suspicious
