Homemade wheel followup...

by schwab » Tue, 27 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Just a word of thanks to all the fine RAS folks out there who pitched in
to offer wise words of advice regarding my homemade wheel dilemma.

:-)

It's working great now. I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone
interested in a Non-FF wheel check out this site
http://www.racesimcentral.net/~lw4750/
and do the same. For a little bit of effort, you can get something that
works better than any Thrustmaster product and is FAR more reliable. Not
to mention, you will save some $$ and headaches by avoiding the
mass-produced blues. Mine might not be as pretty as a TSW, but it will
be as reliable because of the way it was constructed. (I used the
spring/chain/pulley method for steering resistance; see Lew's site for
the details).

I'll get some photos and info about it on my site in the next week or
so.

I am slowly getting used to it. My times are about 1 second off what I
normally ran with the j-stick, but that is mainly because I'm not used
to the "threshold" points of the throttle and brake in terms of where it
breaks traction... but I'm getting used to it and I LOVE the additional
precision and ability to trail-brake into corners. Very nice and very
helpful to be able to separate the motions of accel/brake/turning.

BTW, so far I have found the best setting for me in GPL is to have the
linearity slider 7/8s to the left, and steering ratios in the setup menu
of 14-16:1.

Thanks again.
