I tend to avoid upgrading OS until it's necessary, and the latest NV
drivers not supporting 98SE is perhaps that point.

Anyway, I'm trying before I buy in that I've borrowed a friend's XP
Pro disc to see how I go.

Installed over the top of 98SE (will gut PC and install my own OS from
scratch if I'm happy with XP), got XP drivers for SBLive Value in
there.  Can't get online yet (this post is from work) as I need to
find drivers for the ISDN card.  Hopefully, I can get that rather
fundamental issue sorted.  My other problem is getting my gameport TM
F1/NASCAR Pro recognised.  The gameport (on the SBLive) is fine but
I've lost the listing for the wheel...

I can't get to the Thrustmaster website as it's blocked at work.  Are
there XP drivers for this kit?  I only want the pedals to work...

Oh, and do I need to bother with XP Pro as opposed to XP Home?  I***
around with games, photos, video and music on the PC...

XP Home will do all that for you.

Cost you 80 maximum.

Half that if you use me.

Why do you want the newest nvidia drivers? Is there something in the existing drivers that
is causing you problems? I have used nvidia graphics cards since the Riva/Viper days and
have not once been e***d by their driver updates. They have differtent bugs than the
previous versions and are often slower.

Anyway, but all means find out if all your hardware is supported before you upgrade to XP.
IMO, you need at least 256M RAM or else you will be crawling along with XP, and 512M is
noticeably better. A fast processor is also necessary. Win 98SE is still a good choice for
older hardware, not sure if that appplies to your situation or not.

I have heard here, that some gameport wheels like the Microsoft FF wheel
do NOT work with XP.  Double check into your hardware compatibiltiy before
diving in.  See how a $100 'upgrade' can cost several times more???(new
wheel, new isdn card, new etc etc)

existing drivers that

- Reports of significantly improved performance
- The fact that they haven't shown perhaps signals the beginning of the end?

My 3DMark score is up by 500 points from 8300 to 8800 with the XP/2000 only
drivers, but not tested in real world apps yet.

Not blazing, but adequate for XP:
1800XP
256DDR
GF4 Ti4200

rocks.

I'm online now *phew*

Driving rig is:
MOMO wheel
GPL Shifter
T2 pedals thru Rockfire USB converter for clutch
TM NASCAR Pro pedals into gameport for gas/brake

Looks like the Pro pedals will only work combined with XP which is neither
use nor ***y ornament...

Will try them with the rockfire see what that gets me.

Cheers,

As i understand it you did an "Upgrade" from win98 to XP, have you tried to
uninstall the hardware at fault, disconnect them physically, re-boot,
shut-off, re-start and plug them in live if they are USB ( or before
restarting if it's not....)

Dave,
My MSFF Gameport wheel works great with XP PRO. No software or profiles but
the wheel and pedals work great.

OK, not getting much time to tinker, but have found that a way to get
split axis with the old NASCAR/F1 Pro in XP is through a Rockfire
converter.  Cool.  Hopefully, I should be able to connect the T2 pedal
to the gameport and I'm sorted...

Preliminary findings are that in N2K2 my D3D framerates are down but
OpenGL performs a little better even though vsync appears to be on.  I
had better performance in 98SE with D3D.  Not done any tweaking yet.

wrote somtehing like this:

I have the T2 connected to the gameport, and I've used it's gas pedal
as a clutch with my Logi MOMO, and it works just fine in XP.  I also
took the gear shifter from the T2 (sawed it off the wheel's base
actually ;) and screwed it on my desk next to the MOMO =)

Do the NASCAR Pro pedals use same kind of base as the T2 pedals? Ie.
can they be bolted together to get some sort of three pedal set? I've
been trying to find another T2 set, but no luck yet. I'm currently
using the MOMO's pedals for gas/brake...

Game port devices will work fine with Windows XP "if" there are controller
settings available within the games themselves.  Problems arise when the
user wants to use the game port (which only has limited support in XP), and
expects to run through all the adjustments just as they did in Win9x.  Since
XP doesn't support the *.vxd file format necessary to get all those little
Control Panel/Game Controllers tweaks underway on the older game port
devices, we miss out on them.  Some of the games like F1 2001 and Grand Prix
Legends allow users to edit the *.ini files in the games themselves, game
port devices work fine under Windows XP.

Nice one ;-)  I might consider that mod if a decent CART sim gets
released (if I've still got the wheel anywhere...)

No.  I sit the T2 base next to the Pro, which isn't so bad other than
the space it takes up.  The problem with finding another T2 pedal set
is that they don't support split axis.  If you were *really*
adventurous then, as you know, there is space for a third pedal in a
T2 set...
