GTR2002 24hours cars/races?? Where?

by Mike Beaucham » Sat, 01 Feb 2003 16:06:24

Maybe I'm wrong, but in GTR2002 there seems to be a decent amount of
references to a 24Hour class of cars? Is this a separate class, or is it
just the same GT and NGT classes? Seems as though it's a whole separate
class on that opening menu. Maybe I'm assuming there's a prototype class
that's supposed to come out too? Although there hasn't been a single mention
of that.

Also, Spa is listed as a 24 hour race (If I remember correctly). But, a 100%
race only gives me 49 laps I think :(

Also, am I safe to assume that there will never be 24 hour races in GTR2002
because the F12002 engine doesn't allow time changing? If that's not the
case, some 24 hour races would definately be cool!

I think the inability to save prevents 24 hour racing (since there's no time
acceleration mode), unless you're completely insane and willing to do it
real-time. :0)  The lack of day/night cycle also prevents this from
happening.  I would LOVE a game that allowed an accelerated 24-hour race
(say 1-2 hours real-time, longer with game save options) with time change
and weather (clear sunny start, dark rainy night).  I know it's been done
with Le Mans for the PC and PS2 but I'm looking for an actual quality sim
that models this process.

It's amazing that all the "dream" features already exist in flight-sims
(dynamic campaign, dynamic weather, great AI, excellent physics, and superb
weapons modeling) yet auto racing sims haven't approached the "ideal".

THe 24hr race that defines the 24h class is indeed last year's SPA.
What Simbin did was define that class for the extra cars that ran only the
Spa endurance run as opposed to the full FIA GT season.  However many of
the fantasy cars are also being grouped in that classification.
You could increase the laps for Spa by editing the game.gdb file located
in the gtr2002season folder.
There is no 24 hour time scaling feature in F1 2002, BUT, the SSM team
at LeMans 24hr 2002 have come up with a twist.  They have 4 versions of
LeMans with day, night, dusk, and dawn lighting conditions.  You can run 4
fairly long races to compile a full day simulated event.  They expect to
release their 50 car mod update in late March.  Also they were tinkering
with the dynamic weather feature to see if they could use that for changing
the dusk & dawn tracks to fake the darkening and brightening of the
changing time periods.  I haven't seen any updates tho in quite awhile.

Years ago, I proposed a Le Mans game to Papyrus.  It would have had
day-to-dusk-to-night-to-dawn-to-day, dynamic weather, and a driver-change
feature.  At the end of your 'stint', you would come into the pits and
hand-over to another online driver (kinda like IGI sims where you resume
control coming out of the pits), or you could hand-over to an AI driver if
no one volunteered to be your co-driver.  That would give you a couple of
hours for the Five S's (sleep, s**t, steak, shave, and sex) before you had
to get back in the***pit.  In pre-broadband days it couldn't be done
because the code didn't exist to reestablish a connection.  Of course,
Papyrus said it couldn't be done...but then they always said that.

Hahaha.. Yes, I -AM- talking about playing the game for 24 hours straight!!
My friends did it before in that Lemans 24Hour game for Dreamcast, and they
even videotaped themselves every hour to do a "status report".

I'd love to do the same in GTR2002 :)

I mean, what else have I got to do for 24 hours? It will be at least 2
drivers driving in shifts.
