TrackIR and Race Sims - Questions

by BRH » Sat, 19 Mar 2005 10:45:45

After reading positive reviews here and on the flight-sim newsgroup, I
decided to order a TrackIRPro3 to use with racing sims such as GTR, GPL,
etc.  (Note: I don't have the vector expansion).

So far, I've tried it with GTR and am having some problems getting used
to it.  So, I've got a few questions for those of you have some
experience with it.

1.  How long does it take to really get used to it?  I find that I
subconciously try to complete some of my turns by turning my head rather
than the wheel.  (Sound stupid, I know...)  This is particularly true at
slow, tight turns like the chicanes at Monza.  I see where I want the
car to go, and my mind mistakenly tells me that I'm on the racing line
when I'm really tracking way wide.

2.  Is it possible to re-map the F12 default re-center key to something
else?  Neither my Logi Profiler nor Game Commander "see" the F12 key,
and reaching for my keyboard to re-center doesn't work well, as my
"head" isn't facing the optimum direction when doing so.

3.  Are you using the default profile with GTR, or another one?  I
thought that there were other profiles for download for various sims,
but I can't find them.

4.  In racing sims in general, have you disabled the "pitch" (up and
down) axis.  It seems to me to be worthless (and sometimes annoying) in
race sims.

If you have any tips, tweaks, profiles to share, I would appreciate
them.  From what I've seen so far, it's a neat little gadget, but based
upon my (rather short) tryout, the jury's still out as to whether it was
a worthwhile purchase.

Thanks!

I found the answer to Question #2 my self (It's under "Hotkeys").  Any
help with the other questions would be appreciated.

I am looking forward to any answers to your questions!  Although I
don't have GTR or GPL.  Would buy them if I knew they were available
here in the US (well, GTR, that is).

Any way, have you tried posting your questions at the Natural Point
web-site's "Community Forum"?  It is pretty active.

TrackIR and Race Sims - Questions

I'm also new to TrackIR so I don't know for #1, I guess it varies from
people to people.

For #2 - New Beta S/W 4.023 supports Direct-X button for centering and other
Track-IR Hotkey. (In GPL it was already possible with settings in the
GPLSHIFT.INI file). It's great to re-center using a steering button.

#3 - I don't have GT-R yet, waiting to be able to get it in Canada. Wayne's
profiles are now available on the NaturalPoint site.

#4 - I'm thinking about removing it, in flight sim it's great!

Hi Bert, here is my take.

1. This is an individual thing but Im still not having as much luck with GTR
as Im having with Pacific Fighters and Lomac. Im having the same problem
going wide in the turns and turning my head instead of the wheel ;)

2.  Yes, in the profiler under "hotkey" tab.

3.  Im using a profile sent from NP and adjusted to my liking.

4.  Yes, I ended up turning off the Y Axis in racing sims.

If I only did racing sims Id feel the same way Bert.  This thing has really
brought new life to Pacific Fighters for me but like you the jury is still
out on racing sims.

Wayne (Naturalpoint) sent me a racing profile that I can send to ya if ya
want.

Mitch,

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in making the adjustment (ie - going
wide in the turns).  I can't imagine how it must throw you off at first
in flight sims, since they use more than one axis!  I have a few
flightsims that I don't get into too deeply.  (I can't aim for s__t.)
But I'll have to fire one up to see how this thing plays with it.

Regarding the GTR profile you received from NP -- Yes, please forward it
to me, if you don't mind.  How do you add a "borrowed" profile to the
TIR drivers BTW?  I made my own GTR profile which I'm still tweaking.
Basically, I added significant deadzone and flattened out the
acceleration curves because the default racing profile was just way too
sensitive for me.

Thanks!
Bert

That profile is OTW.  Install it into drive:\program
files\naturalpoint\trackir4\profiles.  Its and .xml file.

For whatever reason its much more *natural* in flight sims.  Ive used it
with IL2/PF, MSCFS3, MSFS4, and Lomac.  I still dont really care for the
vector expansion (6DOF) very much though (only the MS games anyway).  Im in
a recliner and I cant get very easy roll or up/down in/out.  To this point
I disable it in all games except NSR.  I dont know why but NSRs TIR support
is extremely well done.  About the best Ive seen for the 6dof in a racing
sim (fwiw).
