GPL 1.2 Problem

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Larry Hawe » Sun, 21 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Just downloaded 1.2 patch and it is like I am driving in another world.
Frame rate is down from 22-27 to 11-18; sound is awful with 5 or 6 cars
(they don't even sound like engines) and the screen jerks around and
makes the car almost undriveable. I can't figure out what has changed
and will load 1.0 back to see if that cures it. Has anyone else had a
similar problem? The weird thing is it ran great in 1.103 and fell apart
in 1.2. System:  PII 233; Voodoo 3 2000; Sound Blaster Live; 64 megs
ram.

Thanks for the help

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Larry Hawe » Sun, 21 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I reloaded GPL 1.0 and it works fine again. Graphic detail bias high and all
objects, 10 soundds and 12 cars and no problem. Back to 22 - 25 fps. No one
else with this problem?

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Rand » Sun, 21 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I have no problem with sound but even though my frame rates show the
same as 1.1 the video is so jerky that GPL is unplayable.  If I go
back to 1.1 or 1.0 it works fine

Thanks for the confirmation Randy. Tried it again and the same thing. Don't see
much advantage to 1.2 so will probably stay with 1.0/1.1.

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Jan Hoviu » Tue, 23 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Randy, Larry,

I don't know whether you're into online racing with GPL but if you are I would
advise to figure out what's wrong with your system because all races hosted from
GSB will use v1.2!
Since a lot of people don't have the slomo-effects you're describing it must be
something in your system which could be caused by for example crappy information
in your Windows Registry due to installation/de-installation of GPL add-ons.
Especially when you've used beta-versions this might happen.
I would suggest to do the following:
Backup your drivers (typically in c;\sierra\gpl\drivers directory)
Deinstall GPL completely (make sure the sierra-folder (typically c:\sierra\gpl
is removed too)
Deinstall GSB too (make sure you remove the folder where it was installed too)

Search for GPL/GSB entries in the registry using regedit (be carefull
here!!!!) and remove them
    Re-install GPL v1.0
    Apply the (proper) v1.2 patch.
Install the newest spyboy (beta) which supports GPL1.2 (can be found at
vroc-site).
Test whether GPL still works correctly.
Eventually put back your drivers in the proper location
    Test it again.

Please let me know how it works.

Jan.

I just got done uninstalling everything and reinstalling GPL,  still
the same problem.  I guess it's v1.1 until I can figure this out.

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Larry Hawe » Fri, 26 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Jan Thanks for the reply to my earlier post. I have been busy and haven't been able to
respond to your suggestions. It appears in my system that the 1.2 patch works OK until
I add some WAV files of car sounds AND turn on force feed back in the core ini file. I
have a Microsoft sidewinder wheel. 1.1 can handle both the WAVs and FF but 1.2 begins
to make these awful noises and run really slowly. The car sounds are so much a part of
the game that I will probably leave them with FF in version 1.1 and set up a separate
load of GPL 1.2 for internet play. Not enough time in my day to try all the registry
suggestions or tweak much more but will let you know if I discover something of
interest. By the way what is GSB?

Thanks again Larry

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Larry Hawe » Sun, 28 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I posted this problem earlier and thought I had a workaround (much help from Jan) but no
matter the combinations I use I cannot get GPL 1.2 to work correctly. When I use my
Micorsoft FF sidewinder wheel the sound gets horrible; like it was recorded underwater. If
I load the WAV files of Ferraris etc. it gets way worse and the frame rates go way down. I
want to load version of 1.2 strictly for the internet but it is so bad as to be
unplayable. No problem with version 1.1 with the same features (actually more detail)
turned on. Does ANY body have a clue? PII233 64 meg RAM, Sound blaster Live, Voodoo 3
2000, Microsoft Sidewinder FF wheel.

Just had a thought. In order to activate the Force Feedback I load a core.ini. file. Is
there another way to activate FF and/or could the problem be in the core.ini. The biggest
baffler is the change in versions and not many reported problems other than with this
system.

Here's the core .ini file; hope it is not too unreadable.

Thanks Larry

GPL 1.2 Problem

by Larry Hawe » Mon, 29 Nov 1999 04:00:00

It looks like version 1.2 uses more resources in my particular system. If I turn off all
detail in mirrors; number of sounds to minimum, no arms, no smoke, skid marks etc. etc. all to
the lowest settings, the sound is OK and the frame rate is better.  I can see the problem is
very uncommon judging by the responses to this post so will live with it and thanks for the
help.

If you want to try without the core.ini; just rename it and see. If
that helps, just uncomment out or cut out the parts that don't relate
to the FF. Most of the core.ini is not needed for offline play. It is
mainly useful for online play.
