Whats the point in the 'Pit In' button?

I have tried entering the pits without
pressing it, and the pit guys are all there
ready to change my wheels etc.

Does it actually serve a purpose, or is it
purely cosmetical?

In F1 2000 (their old old game) when you pressed pit in and went into the
pits, the pitguys would take like 30-40secs before they were ready with you
car.
Thats why you had to tell them you wanted to pit early on!.

In 2002, it doesnt seem to matter :/

Actually, its so your teammate doesn't pit when you do.  I had it happen to
me in F12002.
