I have no problems with Directx 8, and GPL.

As soon as I installed N4 (and it installed DX8), I couldn't use the d3d
graphics option anymore, so I am forced to live with occasional screen
freeze-ups with 3dfx.  If anyone has any suggestions Id love to hear them,
because on-line, I prefer to run d3d for stability.

Here's my system:

3dfx Voodoo Banshee 16MB AGP-I know its old, but cant replace right now
SB 64V PCI

Everything worked fine b4 N4 installed DX8....

Did you re-install your video drivers? Some drivers
write over Dx files. So when you install a new
version of Dx it might overwrite driver files!

No I didn't, but another problem is that there are no official DX8 compliant
drivers for the old Banshee either...they are all DX7 or earlier

But thnx for the idea

have you tried the drivers at voodoosource.net?  I know they have dx8
drivers for the v3 and V5, but I don't know about the ol banshee.

DirectX8a was better than DX8.0, and I now see MS has released a DX8b (altho
I haven't tried it in GPL).  Do NOT, under any circumstances, try any of the
DX8.1 betas floating around; they will ruin you for life.

This worked for me a while back with my voodoo 2 card (and I do mean a while
back), I remember using the Direct x 5 drivers when direct x 6 was out. Just
reinstall the drivers over top of the latest direct x. It might work for
you. Like I said it worked "back in the day". Your best bet is to "move on"
to a newer video card. I hate to say it, but the banshee was ***when it
was released.

You can't install older drivers over newer ones for DirectX, it says newer
version exists.  But thanks anyway....

You should be able to install older video drivers and sound drivers after
updating dx.  You can't use the stuff included in a DX update, but if you
have a good set of video and sound drivers they should install independant
of the DX update.
