N2 50th Rendition Patch?

by Otto Mathek » Fri, 25 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Despite the fact that my ***ion to ICR2 has taken over my life, I
just picked up a copy of
N2 50th edition.  Of course, it won't run right out of the box and it
appears that it doesn't recognize my Stealth 220.  This leads me to ask
if a patch is needed as is the case with ICR2?  If so, where can I find
it?

Second question.  I know it is a mistake to even try to use the WIN95
version of CART/ICR2.  I have therefore done a DOS install of N2 - was
this the right approach?

Third Question, more obtuse.  Of course, the game won't run and tells me
I have not got enough memory.  This does not bother me except that it
needs a mouse driver.  I have a really small generic mouse driver, but
it does not seem to recognize it.  Do I need to use the microsoft mouse
driver?

Last question, how should I load EMM386.  Specific address, high, low,
not at all?

TIA

N2 50th Rendition Patch?

the dos install is the culprit.  Win95 will recognize your Stealth II and
get N2 up and
running.  To get the dos version going, find a program called v2dosfix.exe
it can had
at bjorn's 3d web site.  this will fool your computer into thinking the id #
for your card is
for a v1k.  But you get the v2k performance.
I tweeked the bios settings to raise my dmatest scores some and can run N2
in win95
with all 39 cars drawn ahead, like 3 or 4 behind, and I get 30fps after the
cars string out
some.  at the start it bogs down to around 24-25 fps  but once things get
going, it hums.

What if you doubleclick the Nasrend.exe file (or whatever the 50th anniv
edition calls the rendition version of the game) from your Windows
explorer? This should start the program under Win95 (or 98) but should
allow you to have your mouse and videocard properly recognized. N2 won't
recognize a V2x00 rendition card from a DOS prompt without an unofficial
patch. OTOH, it WILL run just fine from a full screen DOS box under
win95/98.

N2 50th Rendition Patch?

Running out of Windows95, make sure you start the game with the
"Renddma.bat" file.  This will enable
"dma", which will make a big difference in frame rate with your Stealth II
card.  Your you can add the
" -dma" to your "N2rend.bat" if you like.  These ".bat"  file names may be
different for N2 50th, but look
in your main N2 folder for the "*.bat" files.
