I also have a small desk and what I did was build a stand for the
monitor, sort of a small table with 4 legs, about 6 inches high. This
way the wheel fits under the stand. The wheel is always connected,
when I'm not using it, I swivel the monitor 45 degrees to the left
(the monitor is on the right corner of the desk), slide the chair to
the left and also turn it about 45 degrees to the right. This way I'm
sitting down facing the monitor.
Its a functional solution. An added advantage of having the monitor 6
inches higher is that you don't have to hunch down to look at it thus
keeping your back straight, its also good for driving, the bottom of
the image is actually a few inches higher than the top of your wheel.
