N2002 - Random & Frequent lockups

by Alex Kihuran » Wed, 03 Jul 2002 14:05:42

I finally gave in and bought N2002 at my local EB for $45 (!) (It was just
$40 last time I saw, grr..) even though I have N4, but I couldn't resist
racing online again. Anyway, I installed the game, installed the patch,
changed my resolution to match my desktop's (1024x768x16) and enetered the
game. Well, the first time it froze, so I restarted the game.  I then
calibrated my wheel, changed the graphics options, and clicked done and it
locked up. I tried this many times, same effect until the comp locked up
completely. I restarted, tried again, same thing, so then I tried the
resolution it reccomended (800x600x16) and I could at least change the
options and save it. Next, I went to do a test day at Watkins Glen and it
locked up. I had to restart and I tried several different tracks with one
success until it locked up in the middle of driving. By then, I was
extremely frustrated, so I tried Open GL, it didn't help, upgrading my 23.11
drivers to the newest ones and that made things even worse. Then, I
uninstalled, cleared the directory, and reinstalled and it didn't work, so
then I reinstalled the 23.11 drivers and I'm still having the same problems
without the patch. Any help? Here are my system specs:

P3 667mhz
133mhz system bus
192mb of RAM
20GB hard drive with 1.5GBs left
GeForce 256 w/ 23.11 drivers
Aureal Vortex 2 (3d sound isn't enabled)
DSL connected through a home wireless network
MS FF USB Wheel

Returning the game is not an option because here, EB no longer takes returns
on open boxes :(

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Couple of things:

First, get the Detonator 29.32 or 29.42 drivers from www.nvidia.com.
Second, download the latest patch for NASCAR 2002 - I think it's 1.02

Is it a VIA chipset?  You may want to try different versions of the
4-in-1 drivers.  That was my problem and the latest drivers WERE the
problem and I ended up going back to the drivers that shipped with the
board.

Hah, but now I wish I didn't buy it at first! I know ppl will be mad at me
for saying this, but I should have d/l'd it first to make sure it works and

I tried those drivers and they don't offer support for old GeForce 256's. I
tried them and ALL of my games locked up.

I have the latest patch and tried it again. In 800x600x16, I got a few laps
around the Glen and even got to change the setup before it locked! I also
got online, but each time it locks somewhere along the way *sigh* It seems
it's not the playing of the game that locks it up, it's the navigation of
menus and loading of data.

Thanks,
Alex

I just use the  23.11's, they seem to work fine with everything else.

SimRace

N2002 - Random & Frequent lockups

<SNIP>

CPU is borderline, but should run it.

RAM is marginal, I would suggest 256MB of RAM minimum, I run 1024MB.

GF256 is a SERIOUS issue. I have a friend who tried and tired to run NR2002
with a GF256 and could get no satisfaction. You need a 64MB card, even if it
is an MX model.

I did not see a mention of your OS. If it is Win98SE, you should be fine
with the drivers (though the 20+ level drivers are not made for that GF256,
you may try something below 23.11, like in the 16's or 17's. The 20+
drivers are for GF2-3-4 lines, check guru3d.com for the latest info)

IF you are trying to run the sim in WinXP with that rig, it will be tough
but can be done. I'd definitely juice up the RAM, to 512MB or more and would
definitely look for a higher end video card too.

Good luck.

You've still got a few options left.

I think N2002 did have a problem with the 23.11 drivers the 28.32 and 29.80
worked for me.

From what you write, sound could be a common denominator. Have you tried
disabling sound and see what that does?

If this doesn't do anything, you could slow down the RAM settings in your
motherboard's BIOS. Maybe N2002 taxes your system a bit much.

I assume you aren't overclocking anything, and heat is not a problem, but
you might still look into your BIOS and add a waitstate here and there or
select a slower timing, to make it more stable. You might also want to check
for interrupt problems.

The most frequent cause for problems I've seen are background tasks. You
might want to use a Process Viewer to check what's running (Windows'
Taskmanager isn't enough) and kill everything that shouldn't be running.

Something your graphics card (or an older one) has installed that remained
in the system are also possible culprits - like menu extensions etc. - are
also possible culprits.

Don't give up hope yet.

It does work.  Your computer is busted...

Seriously, you just have some sort of incompatibility going on.  Since it is
affecting D3D and OGL, I'd say it's not the game at all, but maybe your
Video Card Drivers or some other system issue.

See where your AGP Aperture is set in the BIOS.  If it is set to 128MB or
higher, try setting it to 64MB.  That fixed my OGL problems with the patch.

I had the "odd" lockup a few weeks ago and traced it back to Daemon tools.
Most don't have any issues with the DT defaults but I did, go figure.  After
uninstalling all has been fine.

N2002 - Random & Frequent lockups

by Joachim Trens » Thu, 04 Jul 2002 08:25:17

I've found _some_versions_ of the Daemon tools to cause the occasional
issue. But I'm currently on 3.2 and that one works very well here.

You're not the only one...

I used DaemonTools exclusively until NR2002 came out.  At that point, I had
to let it go because of the lockups.

Oddly, some here have been able to make it work.  I don't get it, really :)

The real shame is I'm the one that turned everyone on to this method.  It's
not fair!

That's a new one.  The last one I had was 3.02 or something.

I'll try it again!
