N2002 - Random & Frequent lockups

by Dave Henri » Thu, 04 Jul 2002 11:18:00

Installed with the daemon tools, but I just left image mounted, like it
was in the drive I guess.  And I don't even have the DT icon on the systray
thingie.  But what little I've run N2k2 lately has been very solid.

N2002 - Random & Frequent lockups

by Alex Kihuran » Thu, 04 Jul 2002 13:10:08

I downgraded to the 12.51 (or 12.41, somewhere around there, the official
drivers) stated in the HG F1 2001 forums as the best ones when the game came
out (I had poor performance when F1 2001 first came out, but when I changed
to those drivers it was silky smooth) The game would work in MP about 10% of
the time w/o lockup, so I got 1 or 2 races in, and about 2/3rds of the time
I could get a few laps in in test sessions.

The BIG thing that was affecting the game was the Daemon tools. I have them
loaded for Operation Flahpoint because the copy protection takes quite long
w/ the CD in. I closed the program, went into N2002, and it worked! I even
exited out and came back on to play online in the past 4 hours or so 4 times
and it worked everytime!

BTW, my old GeForce 256 still runs it silky smooth at 30+fps with most
options at high or medium. I probably should get a better one soon, but I'm
tight on money and I can still run new games at 30fps or so.

Thanks for all your help!

Glad to hear you're up and racing Alex!

Just for reference I was using ver 3.11.  The latest is 3.16.  I'll mess
with it later in the week and see if the prob persists.  I had no probs
prior to the 02 papy patch and seem to recall auto mounting a second drive
around the same time so it could be a few things causing the locks.

I wonder...

DaemonTools has been discussed here numerous times due to how it helps you
save your CD, and makes the game more pleasant to deal with.

I just wonder if Sierra has noted this, and in NR2002 has place some sort of
DaemonTools bomb in NR2002 to stop us from using it ?

That has been one of the main reasons DT gets updated as much as it does, to
keep up with changes in the games/copy protection routines.

NP man, I just toss out suggestions based on experience. I figured that your
video card would benefit from 'less' drivers than you were using. I have a
friend that is running that very CPU and video card (PIII/667 & GF256) in
WinXP and we have tweaked and prodded until it will run, around 30 FPS in
NR2002 so I figured you could at least get it running even if you had to
knock down some of the detail.

Glad to hear you can at least turn some laps now, enjoy!

Actually, I turned everything up to full except for draw distance and mirror
detail, and was getting 30fps, so I'm pleased.

Thanks,
Alex
