I've seen it before, I remember there was a crash out of the tunnel at
Monaco in the film, bit bad when you think of Bandini. But this film is
based a little earlier than GPL, I remember it has banking in it, which
wasn't used to my knowledge in 1967.

"Grand Prix" was filmed in 1966, during the actual F1 season.  The banking
at Monza was just thrown in for dramatic effect.  It was last used for F1
in 1961.

One of the benefits of the '66 season that was filmed was the action from
Rouen.  Luckily this was the track given us in GPL instead of the unloved
Buggatti circuit at La Mans, site of the '67 French GP.  The sight of these
heros racing on a real country road with ditches, dirt shoulders, trees etc. is
pretty awsome.  Also visually noteworthy: wee little cars with great big
engines...

AFAIK the 1966 French GP was at Clermont-Ferrand (the circuit is
called Charade?), and part of the Movie was filmed there.

Rouen was site of French GP in 1962 (GPL pictures) and in 1968.
Also, Rheims was often used.

I've been debating whether or not to buy the video.  If I had some snip
it's, I'd have a better idea if I should.

The GPL movie has yet to be shown in the US, at least in my area any how.
So...  Anything I can see to help me decide would be appreciated!

in graham hill's 2nd book he goes into a bit of detail about the film
crew following the grand prix that year.  at clermont-ferrand the crew
put a mock f1 car on a turntable on the back of a low loading truck,
stuck some cameras on it, put actor in it, and went around the
circuit.  actor grips wheel, grits teeth, and pretends to drive, then
at a set point he fakes a spin and the turntable is set loose, and the
spin is caught on film, close up.  according to hill the actor was so
terrified and pale, he didnt quite give the necessary appearance of a
sturdy f1 driver.

i havent seen the film since i read this.  i guess it's something for
you guys to look out for this weekend!

Mike,

If you get SpeedVision up there in the "boonies" of Upstate NY <VBG>,  they show
Grand Prix a few times a year it seems.

Parts of the movie and dialogue leave alot to be desired, but it is still a great
movie if nothing more than the GPL connection and the fantastic speed shots =)

Its worth $19.99 or so to pick up the video at Barnes and Noble.  You can
probably find it for less if you shop around.

Just another correction!
The French GP in 66 was at Rheims! In 65 it was at Clermont Ferrand
(Charade), and in 64 (and 68) it was at Rouen.
