While in the plot of the movie Garner did drive for Ferrari, it was in
the "past" and he did not drive one in the movie.  He starts out in the
BRM (I think) and ends up with the Japanese team (looks like
Frankenheimer couldn't get a license deal from Honda either <G>).

It's Chris Amon's helmet design.

In the January 97 issue of f1 racing magazine their is a feature on
'GP' and the previous post was correct it is Chris Amons helmet design
and the name of james garners character was chosen to resemble amons
on the side of the car in the live action footage

Not exactly true.  James Garner was an avid amateur racer at the time,
and did the vast majority of his own driving scenes in the film (and
got into quite a bit of trouble with his insurance company for doing
so!).  Granted, he was only driving F3 cars which were dressed up to
look like F1 cars.  Of the other primary actors, Brian Bedford didn't
even have a street driving licence until just before filming started,
Yves Montand hated the whole thing, and Antonio Sabates was apparantly
totally useless behind the wheel, so they did very little (if any)
driving.  But Garner was quite heavily involved in the driving scenes.

Believe it or not the actors DID do some driving:) Especially James
Garner, (Who played Pete Aron), who by the time filming finished was a
good competitor for all the real drivers!
Brian Bedford (Scott Stoddard in the film) was too nervous to do it at
any real speed only just having got his driving licence a month earlier.
Yves Montand (Jean-Pierre Sarti) only ever drove up to third gear and
Antonio Sabato (Nino Barlini) spun his car the first time he drove it
and never went very quickly after that.

The cars they used included two real-life 1965 Lotuses and 20 cleverly
disguised formula junior cars.

Cheers!

Graeme Nash wrote in a message ...

It's kinda funny...I was reading the back of the video box, and saw "...and
two camera cars - a Ford GT40 and a 7-litre Shelby Cobra - modified to go
over 150mph, faster than the racing cars themselves!"

We all know a 1960s F1 car can do more than 150.  So apparently, it's true.
I had no idea they were formula 2/3 cars the actors were driving in the
movie.  Hmmph.  I guess I never really thought about it.  What about the
Zandvoort in-car footage (at the beginning of the second videotape, when
Stoddard is qualifying)?  That may have been one of the '65 Lotuses, huh?
It certainly seemed faster than, say, the Spa footage.

Actually, I think that the car/driver on the box is Ferrari's Mike Parkes. I'm pretty sure his helmet looked like that. I also think that they based Aron's helmet off of Parkes' for the movie. I'm not 100% sure, but that what I believe to be true, at least.

It might also have something to do with the fact that Pete Aaron/James
Garner used Chris Amon's helmet design.
