Hi all - anyone had any luck getting a GPL dedicated server running under
wine? (linux or *BSD)?

I'd like to host a server, but would only do so if I could run it on a
secure server....

Cheers,

Linux/BSD doesn't support DirectX. And thus cannot run GPL. Unfortunately.

I believe the dedicated GPL server could be run without any DirectX calls, I
mean, sound is turned off, image is turned off, no joystick. BUT, that'd
require a total rewrite of the thing, and as long as we don't have the
source, it won't be done...

There is software that takes care of security on a windows box, but how that
affects performance/bandwidth/cpu I don't know...

Wine stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Wine provides callable versions of the WIN32API under an I386 UNIX box. As
such, there is an implementation of DirectX calls - both graphics and sound
available (particularly in the Trans*** builds of WINE:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/***.com)

This is my question - if anyone has given it a shot, and what problems
anyone has encoutered...

Cheers,

Dan

What needs to be secure? I mean it is a PC with an OS and two pieces
of Software running, what can be done to it, that can not be redone in
a matter of hours? I guess I am just really behind the times on
hacking.

Hi Steve,

Er, well given this machine is on the internet 24/7, and all the recent
Micro$haft viruses/exploits, theres no way I'm putting windows on it... I've
already got a BSD box which I find much easier to scrutinise for open
holes/problems.

Windows is such a piece of swiss cheese when it comes to security.

Windows running with any number of inexpensive or even free firewall s/w
packages is as solid as anything, and a heck of alot more compatible with
s/w titles, ESPECIALLY games.  Linux is best for internet apps and some
firewall security apps.  For everyday useability Windows is still the best
choice.  When my favorite games will run properly under Linux I'll give it a
another look.

Hmm,

why don't you put gpl on a windows machine and
a decent linux firewall between this and the internet ?

Makes no problems and everything is running in
its best environment ...

With a 24/7 connection you should have a seperate firewall
anyway ...

Oh, I thought you had a spare computer that you wanted to dedicate as
a GPL Server. I have four of those, and they all have Win98SE and GPL
and WinVROC and nothing to protect them, but then again what is there
to protect.

The problem isn't just what harm can be done to you computer,
what's worse is that the machine can be used for things like
spreading viruses and participating in denial of service attacks
on other hosts. When people start to complain to your internet
provider, you may get your connection cut off. Or even worse,
you may end up in court trying to explain why your machine
did this and that to other systems on the net.

Having a windows box (*) permanently connected without a firewall
of some sort is both stupid and irresponsible, imho.

Mats Lofkvist

(*) ok, any box, but since windows both is the easiest platform
to break into _and_ the most common one, it is by far the
one most exploited which makes it the most important one
    to protect

Heres an excert from the log on my web hosted machine. These are all hack
attempts from other compromised hosts within the same class C address as my
host. They are, undoubtably, hacked windows boxes that 'have nothing to
protect'.

Thank god I pay a flat fee for my bandwidth.
