Hi, everybody ! :)
As I see almost all of you, guys, got GPL working under XP.
Maybe I am kinda stupid, but I cannot run it any further than the first
loading screen.
It appears for less than a second and then I am back to desktop.
I have installed both patches up to 1.2 , D3D and CPU speed fix.
In app.ini I tried software and D3D rasterizers - still nothing.
Latest NVidia drivers for GeForce2 Pro and rollback to XP's ones.
Default Live!5.1 drivers and Retail with XP update...
Nothing.
EA F1 2001 works fine with 2002 season cars.
ANY help would be appreciated, please !!!

My system:
P-IV 1600 Socket 478/Intel MB /512 /64Mb GeForce 2 Pro MicroStar/SB Live!
5.1/MOMO wheel

Warren, running GPL here on XP Pro with nearly identical system except for motherboard, chip and your Creative sound, without a whimper.  Before doing the next thing, try reducing the hardware acceleration on your SB Live (all the way left).  If that doesn't help try uninstalling everything and starting from the beginning again.  Reboot between the installs of the original and the 1.2 patch, without opening GPL at all.  Install each update methodically, checking the updates each time by opening GPL after installing the 1.2 patch.

I've run GPL on Windows XP on FAT32, FAT32 converted to NTFS and now on a clean (formatted) install on NTFS.  All have worked just fine, and currently also have F1 2001 (and mods) installed and running fine also on NTFS.

GPL + WindowsXP

Hello,

I use XPpro with an NTFS drive converted from fat32.

I did some tweaking on my system the other day and I managed to break my
GPL......life without GPL, a very sad prospect.

I had the same symptons as you have, so I untweaked all the bits I tweaked
in the registry and no luck, did a few system restores but it still would
not work.

I reinstalled the D3D patch, video drivers etc etc etc.............No Luck.

Ok I thought, I will install a paralel copy of GPL, so I reinstalled GPL,
the patches, addons etc and no, it still would not work, so getting
desparate now I dragged the non working SIERRA directory onto a FAT32 drive
and GPL now worked no problems........

After a little while I remembered that while tweaking, I had also disabled
the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" for
my NTFS disk.

So I right clicked me NTFS drive, selected properties ticked the "Allow
Indexing..............."  check box  applied to everything and GPL now
worked again on the NTFS drive......Life did not seem so bad after all... :)

This maybe worth checking, hope it helps somebody.

James.

I had trouble with GPL on NTFS as well.  Never could get it to work until I
went back to FAT32 or installed on a FAT32 partition.  Mind boggling but
that's Microsoft for you.

Check to see if Indexing Service is running.  I turned it off and Gpl did
the same to me, ctd.  Turned indexing service back on, and it works fine.
hope that helps.

Thanks for advice, I had tried yesterday to reinstall everything with
reboots, but no luck.
Today I'll try to turn on indexing service on my NTFS drive. It is turned
off, I did it.
Hope that helps, thanks everybody.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I had the same problem until I changed the "Compatibility Mode" to Win98.  However, I'm now running in Win2000 mode as I get an extra 5fps in this mode ... which is nice! ;o)

Interesting find.  I'm running as a straight Windows XP install on Pro, without compatibility modes for anything.  The only exception that I did upon install was to turn off the automatic running of Windows "themes" when the game starts.  I can verify, however, that turning off Indexing will cause GPL not to start at all.  I'm running XP on a clean NTFS install.

Hi

i was having the same problem with GPL under Windows XP
(only the GPL intro screen and then return to Windows)
and by enabling the indexing service on the GPL directory and
all sub-directories, the game now works perfectly.

Thanks all of you, people, everything works perfect from FAT32 drive and a
bit slower from NTFS with indexing enabled. There IS a little glitch with a
screen color in practice mode when in pits, but the rest is fine.

Warren, you could also look into allocating more resources to GPL when you're playing.  Check this settings by going into Control Panel/System icon.  On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings and then the Advanced tab.  Make sure there's a dot in the radial left of "Programs."  There is also a tab someway to allocate specifically more resources to certain running programs, but I haven't had enough coffee yet to remember.

Are you running the Windows XP firewall?  You may have to open some ports to allow the connection, if you are.
