If it's not to late, one more IMPORTANT suggestion... if it has not been
applied:
5 bonus points to who is leading at the half way point!
Thanks,
Chris

Why would you do that? I though the idea would be to have the game
as realistic as possible. There are no bonus points for leading the
halfway point in Winston Cup racing. You get 5 bonus points for leading
a lap and 5 points for leading the most laps.

Why would they do that? NASCAR doesn't.

Hmmmmmm, Silly me.. in that case, I got something confused...
Why then, do leaders in a Nascar race do their best to stay in front at
least at the half way point, before pitting, when pitting strategy
suggests it safer not to wait?
Is it money they get? Bonus money..?
Something is given to the half way leader.. at least, last I saw, there
was.. and I thought it was bonus points... oh well :)
Yes, there's generally bonus money for leading halfway, but no special points.
Actually, there's all sorts of strange bonus money in Winston Cup, and it all
depends on the race and what the sponsors and promotors come up with. There
are bonuses for moving up the most # of positions, special bonuses if you're
the WC points leader and you win, bonuses at certain lap numbers (companies may
give bonuses for leading a lap that has something to do with their product...
for example Vics 44 cough medicine may give a bonus to the leader of the 44th
lap, or something like that).
But most drivers are after the points. 5 points for leading a lap, another 5
if you've lead the most laps, plus the points for your finishing position.
Some cars stay out late and don't pit right away so that they can be out there
in the lead for 1 lap and collect the 5 bonus points. This is actually how
Jeff Gordon clinched the championship last year... he only needed 5 more points
to clinch even if Earnhardt won and lead the most laps. He stayed out and was
the last car to pit in the first round of pit stops. He lead a lap, got his 5
bonus points, and clinched the championship.

As someone else mentioned, there are all kinds of other money awards for
various things. Heinz donates a $1000 to the charity of the driver that
leads on lap 57. Unocal has a bonus worth $7,600 each race that goes to the
driver who can win the race from the pole. If the money goes unclaimed, it
gets added to the pot for the next race.
Then there's the Winston Million that goes to the driver that wins 3 of 4
specific events, and has been won only once since it started. Dale Jarrett
has had the best shot at it since Bill Elliot collected it, but missed out
when oil on the track took his car into the wall in the Southern 500 this
year.
