And on the sixth day (of April) Papyrus released the
GPL Demo!  Everything else before this was just a
game :)

Here are my records after a few hours (spent mostly
on the G3), just to get the ball rolling:

Eagle
                  GP          G2          G3

Watkins Glen    1:12.91     1:16.62     1:26.23

In the mid-1500s, Nostradamus predicted that on 06-Apr-98 15:41:57, Pat Dotson
would write:

Nice lap time (GP) Pat ... so far I've manage to do a 1:16:78
in an Eagle GP (no helps).  Did it somewhere amongst a three and
a half lapper before I spun out --- but man, those three laps were
ugly: hitting guard rails, locking up the brakes, fish-tailing all over
the track  :^(  ... at least I didn't get caught in a burning car like I
did a couple of sessions before.

Well, back to practicing ...

Hee hee!  1:11.63 with a Lotus GP for me!  Of course, the guy who
runs the Apex claims a 1:09.xx so I've still got some work to do...

Finally!  A serious driving sim that rewards flamboyance!

the Lotus has awesome handling:) i was using that American Racers or
what
ever it is called (forgot) for the first few hours and was never quite
happy with it - but i could never tell if it was me or the car that
was causing all the spinning:) i never completed a good lap! then i
hopped in teh Lotus, and DAMN it is awesome! it is much more
controllable
for huge powerslides, i can catch potential spins better, etc. i'm still
useless and have only completed 3 laps without screwing up somewhere,
but
with a 1:11, 1:10.3 and 1:10.1, i don't suppose that's too bad:) now if
i can just figure out how to brake and enter corners properly
(especially
the last corner - i still have no clue how to do that right) i could
start
getting some decent times.

Is anyone getting close to the 1:06's the real GP racers used to do,
yet?

yeah!:) except the spectators probably think i take my flamboyance a
little
too far when i go flying into the crowd a couple of times a lap:)

Lotus GP 1:08.14. Pure luck. No faster than 1:11 any other lap.

The last turn is a little tricky, if I***up a lap it's generally
there.

I've done 1:07s, but Doug Arnao (one of the other testers) has run
some 1:06s. I think one of the Papy guys has gone faster yet.

Cheers!

Nope, I've got replays if you want to see them.  It was
disappointing to hear that people are beating my GP time
by 3 seconds.  The 1:12 came after only about 15 laps
though.  I'll get faster tonight :)

Of course you did get a demo of that lap didn't you? I mean if out of the
blue you do a lap that is 3 seconds faster than your best you couldn't help
but save the replay for the many fast lap comps that are starting up.

1:07!  I'm assuming that those times are done with access
to the garage setup options.  The demo doesn't allow access
to the garage options so the setup is fixed.  Please tell
me I'm not six seconds off the pace! :)

The above time of course were not with the demo, so I thought I'd
download the demo and turn a few laps to see how the times compared. I
figured I'd give myself five laps to set a time to compare (and
perhaps to give people something to shoot for).

Outlap
Lap 1 - Spun
Lap 2 - Spun (Yike this car is tail happy!)
Lap 3 - 1:10.16
Lap 4 - 1:09.48
Lap 5 - 1:09.39
Lap 6 - 1:09.01

My best time in the allotted laps was a 1:09.39, but my sixth was a
1:09.01. My seventh was in the mid 1:08s I'd guess, but I downshifted
to first too soon braking for the last corner, locked the rears and
spun out :-(  I'd say a low 1:08 / high 1:07 shouldn't be too
difficult, so I'll watch the time with interest :-)

BTW, I saved a replay of the 1:09.01 if anyone wants it, and will
upload to alt.binaries.simulators.auto or to the GPL Forum. There'll
be faster ones around before long, but it may give people some
pointers. Fast and loose _ain't_ the way to go, in fact I think I only
hung the tail out once in all those laps and that was accidental.
Powerdrifting is important, but not so much that*** the tail out
is obvious - you'll hear the drift in the car, but you can't see it
from and external view.

Cheers!

Correction, it IS possible. Another few laps and now running 1:08.5 to
1:08.8, with a best of 1:08.11 - looks like a 1:07 is on. Who's gonna
be first....? :-)

Cheers!

Nope, didn't save it (didn't know I could), so I've got no proof. It
was an UGLY lap anyway--sliding all over the place, barely staying on
the track. I'm not much for fast lap comps anyway, so I don't usually
save laps. Should have though!

Like I said, it was pure luck: I have a Voodoo Rush card, so I'm
playing in D3D, and so have had to turn all the details off, which
makes it next to impossible to pick up my braking points. I'll wait
until the real non-alpha game comes out, and see if I can run a lap
worthy of competition.
