How do you go fast in GPL?

Me again, resident slowpoke.<g>
I ran some laps at Watkins Glen tonight.  15 in a Ferrari, 15 in a Lotus.  I
tried Greger's 1:03.22 Lotus setup.  I could only get down to 1:07.36.
Comments:first, every time I hit the brakes, the car wants to spin to the
right.  Second, the brakes seem to be an on/off switch.  Either the tires are
squealing from lockup, or the car doesn't slow down enough.  Third, the car
never seems to 'over-rev'.  Has anyone else noticed these issues?  I've
double(triple)-checked my controller callibration(both win95 & GPL), because 2
and 3 sounded like controller issues.

And before anyone asks why I'd compare my laps to Greger - it's because I'm
able to download both the lap replay AND the setup used to run it.  I don't
think too many sites have 'mediocre' laps to download...<g>
So, how do I find those other 4 seconds?  Or even 2?

I find the default setup to be best, knock the brake ratio to 52 or 53
percent and leave three gallons in it. So far a 1:05.76.

I could only get down to 1:07.36.

Probable brake bias.

Second, the brakes seem to be an on/off switch.  Either the tires are

Probable brake bias, again...

 Third, the car

Hmmm... Good point, upon further thought #1 would be less than 52% and
#2 would be greater than 53% (brake bias). Probable no help but give the
default a try, certainly easier to handle...

53% is a good brake bias for Watkins Glen I feel.

Adjust the brake bias a little ;)    Technically, I like when Im into the
braking zone (the perfect example is the on the backstretch at the Glen) to
lock the tyres at the start for a small fraction of a second so I don't lurk
to the right.  Also especially at that turn, don't downshift too much.  You
will like to keep the power range at low revs when you start to
reaccelerate.  The Glen has mostly right turns (the left ones are all but
one turns at full power) so it's normal to adjust your setup that way.

Eldred,
An alien once told me when I asked this very same question he gave me 3
bits of advise

1: SLOW ***Y DOWN
2: Use all ALLLLLL of the track and,
3: Dont change down at Monaco use the brakes

Now i go slower, fall off more often and get lapped at monaco after 2 laps
instead of 3 ;)
(only kiddin im fatser just doing the first two, and i still suck at Monaco)

Ok, so where do I slow down?  I mean, I'm already slower at the entrance,
middle, and exit of every corner.  How does going even slower help?  As far as
using all the track - I think I need another monitor.  I can't always see the
track out point clearly enough... :(
And I *still* can't find any markers I can use for a turn-in point...

Stick to one track, one car, one setup for 2 weeks, you'll come out of
it, a lot quicker and more consistent than you were going in. Every time
you trade cars and tracks, you are relearning things and not getting
much further along than you were. Sticking to 1 car/1 track, nothing is
changing on you. I think that Steve Smith had it right, don't touch
anything setup wise, until you can do 20 laps in a row all within 1
second of ech other, with no spins or crashes. You'll find speed at
places on the track, you didn't realise was there, I guarantee it.

able to feel the difference. This helped me tremendously with my braking.

I put a squash ball under my lwff pedals but I think I'll have to make
the switch to my chpro's pretty soon. I think a new chair might help me
with the left foot braking idea. I use my left foot to balance while
I'm driving because my chair is an old spinny office type. Of course I
only know how to go slow and I'm not too good at that.

I've done that before.  Although I was in a league this year, so I had to run
multiple tracks in a different marque.
I don't modify setups, because I don't know WTF I'm doing<g>.  I could do laps
all DAY without spinning or crashing(depending on the setup).  The problem
comes when I try something different to gain time... :)

Nope, haven't tried that.  On the TSW2mod pedals, there's no 'ledge' behind the
pedal for the ball to push against.

I think the hardest thing is to try and go faster gradually. You only
need to go very slightly faster, maybe 1-2 mph on each corner to get a
good improvement, especially at a long track like the Ring.

I do think that everybody has a natural limit they will run up against
though. Naturals like Gregor Huttu have a much higher limit than most
other people. Its the same in all fields of sporting endeavour. Shouldn't
stop us trying though.

I've reached a wall at 8:19 on the Nurburgring in GPL. I've done
countless laps between 8:19 and 8:23! Very frustrating.

Here's a tip:  Have you installed the GPLEA Lotus?  Since
doing so two days ago I've shaved a quarter of a second off my Watkins
Glen PB.  Of course, your mileage may vary...

Another download that has helped me tremendously is Granberg
and Matton's Replay Analyzer.  The side-by-side plot of my best laps
helped me isolate which cornering techniques were working and which
weren't.

Hmmm - I have a M$ sidewinder FF wheel. I've not tried using a squash
ball yet, mainly because I can't find one! (I know I have some in the
house somewhere - just not entirely sure exactly where!)

I'll have to try it though - it seems to work for a lot of people.

One thing I would like to try out is this 'split-axis' thing. Basically,
I'd like to map my accelerator pedal to one axis, and my brake pedal to
another, so I can use full travel on both, rather than having them both
use the same axis.

Anyone know if this is possible to do with the Sidewinder FF wheel? I've
looked through my sidewinder profile thingy and can't see where it could
be set. Anyone care to walk me through it, or tell me it's not possible
with this wheel?

I've been waiting for an FAQ to appear, as I guess this question must
crop up often, but nothing so far - is there an FAQ for this group?
