How do you go fast in GPL?

Yes, I know the feeling . . . It is kind-of like my brain is running
out of memory and it is swapping the data to hard disk and then I am
off spinning in the grass. :-) Oh, this is the section where it goes,
yes, yes, oh ***I am going to fast and where'd this turn come from!

I find I have to be in an odd mood for the ring, otherwise I just get
frustrated way to quick.

I've analysed my best lap (8:18.7) with a replay analyser and compared it
with a sub-8 minute lap, and I'm pretty well up there on the fast
sections. I found where I was losing the most time was in very tight
sections like Kallenhard and similar hairpins. I find it quite hard to
judge in GPL whether I'm doing 40 or 70 mph in these 1st gear turns. And
the difference is critical as you can easily spin off going just 5mph too
fast!

I wish they had an onscreen speedo in the***pit view. I know they
didn't have it in 67, but they had more speed cues like the rumble of the
tyres and the rush of the wind in their faces.

That's been the biggest stumbling block for me is that my 1:1 on-track
racing experience is of no use in judging the slower speeds as what I
see doesn't correlate at all to the speed figures displayed in replay.

I also suspect that one of the reasons that Monza is so popular is
that it doesn't have any truely slow corners to trip up the average
driver who's trying to gauge their relative speed by what they see on
the screen.  That's why it's considered a "simple" or "easy" track.

Silverstone drove me nuts because I was perpetually overcooking the
entrances to the corners.  What appeared to be a reasonable entry
speed was in fact way too fast.  I finally learned it by driving the
entire course in one gear lower than I had been until I could judge
the proper speeds entering corners.

THANK YOU!  I have the same problems at Rouen, Monaco, and Spa.  I always end
up coasting to the turn, ready to jam on the brake if it turns out I'm going to
fast...
I don't feel so bad now...<g>

Before you get a drivers lisence in Norway, you'll have do a test at a
slippery track (during winter we drive on snow and ice (at least in the
northern part of Norway, where I learned to drive), thus a need for
knowledge about driving on slippery surfaces).

In one of the turns I had complete control at 32 mph. At 34 it was
impossible to keep the car at the track. I've experienced the same thing in
GPL.

I'd like to see som snow at the Ring :-)

Next time you get in your car, try to drive with one eye closed. With
simulations, we have crappy (relative) graphics and monocular vision.

By the way, only attempt the above on a closed course with a
professional driver :-)

says...

Absolutely! It took me *ages* to make myself slow down enough for corners
like Copse and Stowe - and I've driven quite a few laps on the real
circuit. Admittedly in a road car - but quite a fast road car (TVR
Griffith 500)

I've found quite a good way for these after some experimentation. Brake
earlier and gentler than you would normally, but make sure you don't slow
down too much to judge your entry speed as accurately as possible.

You can lose far more time by braking at the latest possible moment and
screwing up your entry speed than braking a bit earlier and getting it
right.

Not exactly - there is certainly enough power to scare yourself:-)
